Power Assist flat spot on edge
on: April 15, 2009, 12:37:59 PM
Has anyone else noticed that the power assist, well mine anyway, has a small flat spot on the cutting edge of both blades where the lock button comes into contact with the blades when folded? You have to look along the cutting edge in a good light or gently run your nail along the side of the edge and you'll feel the nick.

I don't think a whole lot of us have a Power Assist yet.  I think the cost and the fact that the jury is still out on whether the design and implimentation are solid yet.  Maybe you should do a personal review on it.

I'm probably going to wait until I can trade for one or get one cheap as the design just doesn't look right for me.

yup, appears to be a design flaw, just recieved a Tactical Black Power Assist and sure enough, as with my silver one, there are flat spots on the edges of both the plain and serrated blades, it can be remedied with a little tlc and a sharpening stone but a tad annoying none the less. Still a nice tool though.

You know thats where attention to detail pays off.  The one thing noticed on my Sog Pliers is the blades edges when closed inside the handle all make contact with the handle metal.  Not really a big deal perhaps but I guess one has to remember to close gently and not snap them back and probably realize that it could cause the blade to dull after time because of it.

I checked both a/o blades on my powerassist and no flat spots.   Anyone else check theirs yet?.

Sean, several of my Charge/Waves do that.  The point where the plain edge blades hit when closing the blade tends to flatten and roll a bit.  Sharpening it is easy but it makes for a small flat spot on that part of the blade.

I guess no tool is going to be perfect.  I actually enjoy the routine multitool maintenance part.

Thanks for the info on this.  I checked the one I have in my office and could not find anything.  I'll check a couple more around the office and see if I find anything.  Can anyone post or email me a picture of the flats spot on a blade sop I can discuss with engineering.  You can email me at marketing@sogknives.com

I've milled the flatspots out of my 2 Power Assists but if they show up again through usage i'll take a pic of them and forward them to you.

I noticed this flat spot on the plane edge the first time I opened it.  It seemed to be where the blade made contact with the lock release.  I touched up the blade on my sharpmaker and haven't had the problem since.

Mine too has a "flat spot" though I think it is only noticeable as I have the black version. I've tried to see what causes it, but that part of the blade doesn't seem to touch anything when it closes...

I'm not sure if anyone ever sent Chris a pic. Can either of you guys post one up?

I'm terribly taken with the Power assist, but mine doesn't seem to have this problem.
I used to come here a lot.

On mine it´s the same, little nicks in the blade from the lockbar inside the handle, on both blades.
I try to make some pics of it. Another thing is, when you cut hard wire with it, the handles close to much together, they basicly push on the bladespine and that causes imho these nicks.

Try to get some good pics for you guys  :)

Best wishes
Robert

Ok, here are the pics:

sometimes the blade hits the lockbar inside, it was worse when it was new

next problem i see is the handles closing too much, they push on the spines of each blade, the blades push on the lockbars inside - nicks

my old Powerlock don´t close that far:

Hope you see what i mean.

Best wishes
Robert

I do see what you mean, and yes - that looks irritating!

Mine's different

The blades don't reach the lock bar, and the handles don't touch when the pliers are squeezed (I think the crimper is acting as a stopper).

EDIT - I can squeeze the pliers so it does what you are showing, but it takes a pretty serious effort (two hands) to do it.

Probably the biggest difference is that I've hardly used mine.
I used to come here a lot.

I tried to adjust the screws, didn´t help much. Also got the nicks when i got it brandnew.

I don´t mind it much, but that shouldn´t be like that.
Still love this tool :tu:

Mine touches when i squeeze the pliers with nothing in the jaws. It doesn't take two hands of force, but more than I would reasonably apply with nothing/something really small in the jaws.

As I mentioned before, the real problem for me is the nicks on the blade. I looked at Argento's picture, but my blade doesn't seem to hit the lock bar. I'm still not really sure what causes the spot on mine.

It seems that this problem is worse when new, and fades as the tool and blades are used. Does anyone who has had the tool for a while have any input? Does anyone who has used/sharpened their blades a few times (and now doesn't have the problem) care to chime in?
