Anyone here wear a kilt?
on: May 05, 2009, 09:31:40 PM
My inlaws are surprising me for a late graduation gift and are buying me my first kilt.  Its nothing fancy, but was wondering if anybody else here wears them.  It will be for my ren faire costume and not and out and about kilt, but I plan on getting another one before this years highland games in my family tartan.  So, who here wears a kilt, tried wearing a kilt, or thought of wearing a kilt?

Over here a lot of Scots wear them to weddings (peer pressure more than anything), and the odd person usually catering to the tourist market, but that's about it. Even if I get married i'll never wear one  :D
Do you have Scottish ancestry ?

I didn't wear one to my wedding...I wanted to, but it was too expensive, but my father-in-law did.  He owns maybe 4 kilts, but actually has no scottish ancestry, or irish.

Sorry if my post was a bit negative by the way, it's just a little bit of a bug bear of mine.
Many years ago I used to collect police patches from the USA, you wouldn't believe the amount of cops seriously asking if I wore a kilt and what clan I belonged to  :D

I linked to them because they have been around quite awhile and I like the Workman style myself, not because of country of manufacturer.

Well I happily wear a kilt.  As Appletree says mostly for weddings, and Hogmanay (new years).  It should also be noted that while they are now accepted as a Scottish garment it wasn't always so.  They are a Highland garment not found in Scotland before the C16th and even then in a very basic "tartan" of natural coloured wool with a thin blue check through it.  A lowlander like myself would never have worn one at any point in history before the romanticising of them in the C19th. Still, I do think they are comfortable and are generally a hit with the ladies.   :D

That's for sure, especially in the USA.
A friend of mine had his son's wedding in Las Vagas, they were all kilted up. The attention they had from the ladies was staggering :o  That and of course the yanks love a Scot  :D

I don't currently have a kilt, but I would proudly wear one.  My mother is of the Buchanan clan, although that's not a thing to advertise around here- Pat Buchanan was a very unpopular Premier of Nova Scotia a few years back and no one has forgotten him.  So, we usually tell local people that we are Robertsons as that is what my mother's mother was!

Even so, I'd wear a kilt in either tartan, and do it proudly.  But then, as many of you know, I have no shame.  I'd also thought it would be a great uniform for the security company I want to eventually build, as my feeling is no one will mess with anyone in a kilt!

I'd hire you to guard something in the parking lot in Feburary just for the heck of it, you'd have to be in your uniform of course.  :D

I've done worse... and one time I'd probably have been better off in a kilt.

I was stationed at an outdoor event during some freezing rain one day, where for ten hours, I stood in one spot between two transport trailers, with a heavy wind going beneath them.  By the end of the first hour I was soaked to the bone, wearing only the polyester issue pants, shirt and what they laughingly referred to as a winter coat, which was so sodden it must have weighed 40-50 pounds.  Of course I was so numb that by then I didn't notice.  By the end of the evening, I could not feel my feet or my hands, and I had a hard time driving home- I had to hook my wrist on the stick to shift because my hands wouldn't work.  When I finally got home the feeling had partially returned to my fingers, but between the residual freezing in my hands and the fact that my boots were frozen solid, I couldn't get undressed.  It was then that I noticed that my pants were quite literally frozen to my posterior, since my arse and legs got the brunt of the cold wind under the trailers.

I sat in the tub, fully dressed for about an hour until I could finally manipulate my clothing and boots enough to get them off.  A kilt would have probably been warmer (wool instead of polyester!) and probably wouldn't have frozen to my flesh.

Grant's right, kilts are warm.  8 yards of heavy wool wrapped round you tend to keep you nice and toasty.  I remember getting off a plane on January 3rd in New York with 3' snow drifts wearing only a kilt and a wool jumper and not feeling the cold.  All the locals were buttoned up to the nines and thought we were nuts.  :D

I made it a point to never ask anyone I was in charge of to do something I wouldn't do myself, and we had 5 other guys at similar sites that day.  I figured by doing that I proved that while I may have been in charge of people, I certainly wasn't above anyone.

There's a place in town that sells kilts- I think I may have to pop in there and check them out sometime.  I have always avoided it as it's in the tourist-y area of town.

I get my kilted items from kilts-n-stuff.com.  They are a great bunch of people and will help you any way you can.  The one I am getting is a poly wool blend as the real wool kilts are quite expensive.  And, yes the amount of attention you get from the ladies is quite staggering, but guys will always make fun of you.

Well you will certainly get looks from people who are not used to seeing them.  When we go the Ren Faire or Highland games, we always go out the eat afterword in our full costume, and it interesting to see how people react, some ask questions, others point and chuckle, but its all fun in the end.
