How to mix sharp and shiny with cunning linguistics - only here!

Superb  :D  :salute:

English is indeed full of Greek and Latin at its core but is about 1/3 Germanic in origin in it's current incarnation. Throw in thousands of words from many other languages and here we are... talking utter Colorful Enunciatione in it!

True, but the worst influence by far was the toxic French pollution of the hapless English language after the Norman Conquest. ;>

After that English was screwed up beyond any hope of repair:  bizarre spellings, crazy irregular verbs, and lots of other non-standard stuff.

.

trust me, english is EASY. you're blessed.
deutsch is latin-based. The verb changes according what you're doing at the moment.
french requires you to not have sense of ridicoulus to be properly spoken.
chinese is a song. each word has 18 meanings, according the pitch.
Japanese has no plural: "gimme book" and you can have one book or the whole Congress Library, according the situation. It also changes if spoken by a child, a woman, a boss, a slave, a friend.
italian requires is 70% non-verbal. you can say a thing with your voice denying it with face, hands, shoulders, eyes or liver.

Examine just the word "pound". It can be translated to italian with
sterlina
unità di peso
stagno o laghetto
recintare
ristagnare
soppesare
and few more I don't remember.
In english, if you REALLY know a dozen words, you can make a speech in the Lord's Chamber.

Just examine the breakfast to see different approaching.
In Italy "facciamo colazione" "we make brakfast" - a long and labourios process involving many ritual and aestetic aspects.
In UK you "have breakfast" - get it, carry it, eat it when you have time, wtf.
In deutch they "frustuck" "they breakfast" - now, pratically, with determination and will, nearly militarily

ok, now I'm getting my pills. :D

Well its not a billhook but its a large chunk of steel :)  Picked this up from a carboot sale today for the grand total of 50p.

330g, 180mm cutting edge and 5mm across the spine.  Difficult to tell under the crud but looks to be made by John Guy & something or other Sheffield.

Any advice on making it a new handle?

I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

If you've got lots of spare time, how about a leather stacked handle?  Take bloody ages though I expect.  :D

Maybe not :)

Lets face it, this is a hard working utility chopper and that's what it'll get used for again so I'm not about to spend three weeks on a handle for it :)

First issue is that I don't have a lump of wood big enough to make a new handle   Might have to get inventive... I've plenty of plywood :D

Only with a huge amount of epoxy.

I've removed the rust now and and see that it was made my John Guy and Company Limited.  I was hoping that after rust removal I might just be able to redo the edge but it looks like a little more work will be involved.

Maybe you could scrounge up a pre-made tool handle like for a turning chisel...or a discarded chair leg?

I'd been thinking along those lines.  I have an old lamp in the shed with a mahogany stand that I briefly considered but I think I'd like to do the lamp up.

My next thought was, what would the original owner of the chopper (for lack of a proper name) have done?  Probably walked down to the local ironmonger and bought a handle.  I don't have that option these days :(  However I do have the internet so one quick google later I found a reasonably priced source of billhook handles.  These look the ticket, I'll probably just give one a soak in linseed oil and bosh it on there :D

Will that be long enough? If you are planning to use epoxy I would suggest setting that before applying the Linseed oil.

Should be OK.  The site says its 6" which is just a little longer than the original handle.  I'm not sure until the handle arrives how I'm going to fix it in.  On the original handle the tang's tail was bent over at the end..   As the new handle is a little longer do I shorten the handle and duplicate the original fixing or do I put a pin through tang and handle?  Or, simpler still, rely on the wonder that is modern glue to hold it in place?

Yes, you are of course correct about the epoxy/oil order :D
