SOG can opener.
on: May 22, 2009, 07:21:25 PM
I am a person that use the can openers on my multitools very often and after I have gone back to EDC my SOG’s after a period with Leatherman I am very disappointed with the new style can opener that SOG have made.

New design on top. Old design bottom

With the old design you get a smooth and clean cut and it’s also much faster opening a can.

With the new design I have experienced that you get a jagged cut that is easy to cut your self on and it also takes a longer time to open the can.

So, what design do you like?

Is that pineapple?  The can looks like it says "xxxana" as in banana.

Anyway, I prefer the old style design.  I agree that it makes a quicker, cleaner opening.  I don't like the Vic design as well as the old "dedicated" design.  Yes, it works, but the lid is more jagged.  Also, cans with imperfect or thin rims are tougher to open with the "new" design

It says Ananas that means Pineapple in English

Ananas is Norwegian too? It´s the same word in German. Interesting. Anyways, I guess the new design has to be sharpened, for it looks like a Victorinox clone, and that opener works well - but the other direction, so forward opening not backwards like with the old design.

BTW: I never tried LM can openers, are they working well? They do not look so, but I may be wrong.

I think that LM can openers are great.

I prefer the pull type, i.e. leatherman, wenger and vic's combo, they just work better for me.

Per wikipedia, Ananas is the fruit's original name (of Brazilian origin). I looked it up as we have the same word in Greek too.

Apparently ::) the word "ananas" comes from the word "nanas" which means "pine" in some Brazilian dialect. Hence ananas translates to pine-apple. ;)

I'm going to have to try one of mine out next time I open a can, just to see how well it works.

Thinking of a few "lovable and kind" old ladies around here I can't help but notice a striking similarity to a pineapple. :D

So does the word banana have the same origins?

Anyway, I like the old style can opener much better.... it opens both bananas and pineapples very nicely thank you  :D  :multi:

Well both were originally designed by Victorinox so...

Back on topic for a second.  If I'm telling something you already know then feel free to ignore me.  With the new style you make the cut going forward i.e the tool goes in an anti-clockwise direction using the semicircular front edge to cut through the can.  Totally different action to the older style.

A handy and humorous clip to show what I mean.

If this is what you are doing already then I'll just shut up.  :)

It really amaze me that there are people who really don't know how to use can opener. I was fishing with a buddy and he had a can of corn but not opener, so I handed him my vic knife and he was like "er how do you use it?". He really never used the fully manual type before.

By the looks of the can, it looks like you were trying to pull while opening instead of push.  Look at the video Gareth posted (he beat me to it).  I've used this type of can opener before and never had a problem like yours.

By the way, I'm new around here.

I have used it both ways and it still is cr@p, it’s even worse using it when pushing away from you.

In that case buy a Vic.  :D

Seriously, sorry to hear it's not working well for you.  like you I like to use my multi's for even the little things so I can appreciate what a PITA it is when not up to the job.

In my opinion, the old style is faster, cleaner, and easier to keep in the cut around the can.

How do you figure the LM can opener was designed by Victorinox? The LM can opener is a traditional design that looks nothing like Vic's..  ???

As patented by Victorinox in 1946.  Then the newer style was patented in 1951.  before that most (but not all) can openers were the "lobster claw" type that can be seen on the original Soldiers knife etc.

The lobster claw your referring to is the two pronged implement on the Original Soldier, right?  :-\ :)

Yup that's right.  I'm sure it has another name but it's the best way I could think of to describe it.
