Shard To Be Released in 2010
on: June 08, 2009, 11:39:15 PM
An excerpt from an email I got from my contact at Gerber:

On a somewhat related note, you’ll be happy to hear that we’re FINALLY going to have the infamous Shard as an in-line product for 2010! I think at some point you and I talked about a limited run as a promotional item for you. If that’s the case, at least moving forward it’ll be more of a possibility. Let me know what you think.

The big question is, how many of you think you'd want a Multitool.org Shard?  :D

You have all heard the rumors of a Multitool.org branded store, right?  Multitool.org branded Artifacts (and now Shards) are high on the list of items for the store.

Needless to say (don't want to be a showstopper) that any such gesture requires at least some careful planning and a mind for business. I know Grant has both (will that put me higher up the list for the shard? :D) but we probably all can think of an example or two of a forum-branded shop that finally turned to a stone in the neck of its mother forum... :-\

Well the rumors are true- we have the software set up and ready to go, and have had it set up for some time.  The issue is the afore mentioned stone, and the joy of having a whole pile of money I don't have to begin with tied up in stock that may not go anywhere.  Many multitool companies are happy to set me up with a limited dealership arrangement, where I'd get dealer pricing plus the cost of the laser etching (very fair) but I'd be buying them in significant quantities.  While I don't mind doing it if it's a tool folks want, some will be reasonably pricey, and many folks won't spend the money on the same tool they already have when the only difference is a Multitool.org logo on it.

Then there's tools like the Shards and Artifact where the per unit cost is reasonable, but the minimum order is likely to be higher, and the etching will add a significant portion to the cost.... if etching is $5/tool and the tools are only $5.00, that's a 100% price increase.  Which now means that by the time shipping is factored in, members are paying $20 for a $5 tool, so I want to have other things in the shop as well that would make the shipping more reasonable... something like shirts or hats or other tools that you don't mind paying an extra $5 for.  Then we start to get into big money because I need a selection of shirts and hats and posters and full sized tools in order to properly sell a tool that only cost $5-$10 in the first place.... :P

If I'm going to do it, I want to do it right- you all deserve at least that much!
