Rust prevention help
on: June 14, 2009, 06:46:03 PM
Does anyone else have an issue with rust on their knife blades and handles? I must have toxic sweat and oily digits because I am always having to remove small dots of rust trying to get a foothold on my blades with a moderate polish or bead blasting. Any ideas on what I can do to combat this besides using a very fine scotch pad like I currently do? I am thing about something like Tuff Cloth but I want some opinions before I get some.

I use tuff cloth (and they have a marine version too).

I only get "minor" spotting on a few of my blades, like the other day I pulled out my benchmade 710 (D2)
and it had minor dots and I haven't messed with it for months.

On other blades I never get anything, even the ones not used. I do wipe them down when I first get them
with the tuff-cloth. I live in a very moist environment (PNW) so I like preventative maintenance.

I'm guessing no matter what you use you'll continue to get spots on the "Spotters!" just check em occasionally
(couple times a month) and keep the spotting minimal.

+1 on the tuff cloth, the Sentry products do work very well for rust prevention . I also recommend their lubrication products
http://www.sentrysolutions.com/

I have used their stuff on knives and firearms for years

I never really have any problems, but I will always give a knife a good wipe if it's been in contact with water.

Guess I am a rare individual, I am not hard on my tools and sometimes I can be quite protective. Some of my tools have never seen any action because I have a fear of damaging them  ::) I have toxic skin and that's all there is too it, guess I need to invest in some ren wax or tuff cloth. Thanks guys I appreciate it.

Are they Carbon steel knives, or Stainless?  If they are carbon, I would let them get their natural patina.  It'll darken and gain some natural rust protection.  People always talk about rust on carbon steel, but it's not really a big deal.  A little wipe down at night is all it needs to be ok.  I mean, think about this.  Sailors have been carrying carbon steel knives for thousands of years, and they lived in a salt water environment.  Their knives never rusted away and disappeared.  Sure, a little surface rust will appear, but who cares.  Just wipe it off with a bandana.  Same for Stainless as well.  Highly acidic sweat will do that to a knife.  I have the same problem.  However, like I said, just wipe it down and it's good to go.  We love our knives, so a little maintenance shouldn't be a problem.

I know somebody might disagree with me, but I spray some wd40 on my multitools and knives then wipe until its not so slippery anymore for me it helps a lot.

A little oil is always a good choice.

Got a Sog powerlock recently, comes with a leather sheath, instruction book recommends not leaving in leather sheath as this can accelerate rusting process  :P

No Latinoheat, they are steel that are anything from S30V to Sandvik 14C28N (I think I got that right...it's the new kershaw steel). I do try to oil and keep an eye on them, this humidity lately is killing me, going to be a 100 degrees tomorrow not including the heat index.  :( I do have some carbon in a few slipjoints and in a BHK Tiger Knapp, they do pretty good as long as they are looked after as well.

naw, it's not a bad thing, it helps! it's just not the best thing to use. lotsa stuff out there for
long term/harder conditions, easier maintenance (and more expensive!)  ;)

I use the Tuff cloth on my knives and multitools and no rust yet. Have you thought about using a knife with H1 steel? Heard that doesn't rust at all.

Another hint I read about is placing a desiccate packet in with your knifes/MT's. These absorb moisture, and should help with your problem.

I have thought of H1 steel as an idea candidate for my EDC, I will have to get one someday.

I'm with Duckman,  I routinely spray my multis down with WD-40.
I've done this with my tools for years, I just soak the entire tool drawer, it's always served me well and it certainly can't hurt.

When a multi get actually wet I do a more thorough wipe down, and for that I use a Light oil.

My family thinks WD-40 is a cologne.
