Scrapyard Scrapper 5 in SR101 steel
on: September 17, 2009, 12:14:48 AM
Recently i received this knife in a trade from Scrappy; a ScrapYard Scrapper 5

This version was made in SR101 steel (actually modified 52100, a non-stainless ball-bearing steel) which also has been differentially heat treated.
It should keep a good edge as well be very tough.

Handle is made from an extremely durable synthetic rubber called Resiprene C, which only weakness would probably be a lengthy session with a blowtorch.

While the knife itself is a real quality item, i didn't like the original edge, which was way to thick for my liking at about 40 degrees inclusive on the straight part of the edge, and even 45 to 50 degrees on the curved part leading to the tip.

So i decided to thin the edge out to a crisp 30 degrees inclusive, as i like my knives to cut well.
Thus it was time for the Wicked Edge and some good oldfashioned elbow grease, :D

After the diamond hones in gritsizes 100, 200, 400, and 600 the edge looked like this;

And after some wet & dry paper in gritsize 800, 1000, 1200, 1500, and 2000, plus some polishing compound on cardboard it looks like this;

The edge is very sharp as well; able to shave curls from a free hanging hair.
The polishing also hopefully keeps corrosion to a minimum.

Damn, that's some polish! I don't think I have the patience to do that on my knives.

Ooooh, pretty. The 'coon in me tells me to steal it and make it part of my nest, but the rest of me says "Ow, but steal it anyway."

Good job, Kwakster.  It's satisfying getting a blade that sharp, isn't it?  How hard was it to get it like that with this steel?

That's a great job Kwakster  :tu:, it must cut like a razor.
I definately don't have the patience to do something like that and I've been known to spend hours sharpening a knife to get the edge just the way I like it.

OMG, that's an awesome, beautiful mirror-polished edge, kwakster!

Gorgeous, stunning, and amazing :tu:

Personally no way I would do that to a knife, would be afraid to use it after! I like users >:D

Yes it is,  :D

That SR101 steel is actually quite wear resistant, especially the first part; forming the new 30 degrees inclusive edge with the gritsize 100 diamond blocks took quite a few hours.
Each next step was about 20-25 minutes of sharpening.

For more narrow adges like on kitchen knives and most pocket knives i prefer the Paper Wheels though, much faster and also extremely good results.
Problem is that my cheap camera and my lack of camera skills don't allow good pictures of these narrow, highly polished edges that will shave curls from a single hair as well.

This is an MOD Tempest, i think i traded this one form Eodtech;

This was sharpened freehand on the Paper Wheels.
