I've ruined my SideClip
on: September 29, 2009, 10:16:25 AM
I have two SideClips , one a user the other a drawer queen which is totaly unused and mint . I keep it in a platic bag and its got a good coating of WD40 on it . Trouble is when I looked at it I noticed a small patch of rust on one handle . I tried rubbing it with a cloth but it wouldnt come off so I tried a scotch pad soaked in WD40. Its taken off the rust but also left a shiny patch on the metal and light scratching . So my drawer queen it no longer mint  >:( To be honest I'm a bit gutted and well and truelly p*ssed off

If you want to restore metal tools with out damage then the first item to 'invest'  in is an Ultrasonic cleaner - in the USA they are $60 on sale right now at Harbor Freight !

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Category.taf?CategoryID=774

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=91593

I am waiting on a couple tools from a MTO member and the first step in cleaning them / reconditioning them is a bath in the UC.

I've not had much success with ultrasonic cleaners (real cheap ones I admit).  I'm a toothbrush scrubber :)

Dunc, I can probably assist with sorting your SideClip ;)  :tu:
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

Lol - how the hell did you manage to get rust on a tool, in a drawer, coated in WD40, in a plastic bag?  :D

Lol.

I know the bead-blasted Sideclip has a bit of a rep for rust, but that seems pretty extreme.

Condensation? I don't think WD is a great rust preventative.

Someone was going to say it so it may as well have been you.  :D

It is an odd result.   Seems the WD40 has made things worse some how as I get your user Sideclip has less rust than that.

I still think condensation in the plastic bag. WD will blend with water to a certain extent. I recall that with storing a bike over winter and I had sprayed it with WD. The WD actually turned milky looking. Nasty  :o

Condensation sounds a likely culprit.

I've had what 50(?) of these go through my hands - probably more. They were stored in the boxes in an environment where the boxes had got damp and been chewed by mice, transported half way round the world protected only by a cardboard box, and not one of them had any rust.

Mind you I've never thought of storing any of my tools in a plastic bag or dowsed them in WD40 tbh - so what would I know?
