A non-english-speaking man's adventure to understand Chaka Khan...

Ok, I know this is weird, but bear with me: I've got this nice album, "Funk This", by Chaka Khan, and I like it. I'm not even a big fan, but the first song, "Back in the day", just got me. And I listen to it 24/7. Since my english still needs "a sharpening" (;)), a few parts of the lyrics are still a mistery to me. And the internet, believe it or not, wasn't helpful at all!

Now, does anybody of you guys have the lyrics to this song?

Please, I know Chaka Khan isn't exactly the best way to improve my english... :D

Thanks in advance,

A.

I get "up and coming album" and lyrics not available but
if it's a remake song I do see "back in the day" lyrics from other groups
(like Megadeth and others) maybe they are the same  ;)

  • I just don't know what went wrong.
Can't find it. The way she sings is hard to follow, too.

Guess I grew up fast in Chi-town
School, clean up, homework, lights out
Momma was strict about them kids running in and out
Street lights meant you better be in that house

Go to bed when it's light outside
Up... something... something.... mumble...

Then I lose her. :D

Thanks, my friend. I've noticed that too, I'll try to find out if that song has benn written by somebody else.

PS I would pay millions to listen to a Megadeth cover by Chaka Khan. :D

That's more than I got, so thanks!

This was a hard one.

I know. But I swear: as soon as I find those lyrics, I'll post 'em everywhere. :)

And by the way (to you all): isn't it a nice song? I mean... I'm still listening to it! Someone unplug those speakers!!! :D

Can't help you there- I always thought the line "My Poor Heart Aches With Every Step You Take" in that Police song was "My Poo Hole Aches."  It's even funnier when folks start telling you of the "complex imagery in Police lyrics."

Oh, and in Brown Eyed Girl I have lots of people singing my alternate lyrics "going down on the old man with a transsexual eskimo."  Go ahead and sing it to yourself- it'll be ruined forever for you because it fits so well!

And, I'm convinced that the gibberish at the beginning of Pokerface by Lady GaGa actually says "I licked a potato" over and over again.

This is why I am probably the worst guy to ask about lyrics.....  :ahhh

actually, Jewel is a fantastic songwriter that might be easier to follow in english. especially her whitefeather album. very Americanized english.

:ahhh :ahhh :ahhh.... i just read def's post... you know... i've always thought Van Morris was a pooh boy.

check out Moon Dance.... "oh the leaves on the trees are ballin'... to the sound of cheeses that snow"... how weird is that?

i can't get the "transexual eskimo" image out of my head... especially the 3 way implications. Brown Eyed Girl now has WAY more meaning for me than i had at 1st thought.... i think i like it better now.  :tu:

I used to love that song.... then, hearing bad renditions of it 5 nights a week for a few years in bars killed it.  It is one of three songs that will make me toss a band out on the street.

LOL funny stuff :D

I remember a comedian making fun of Elton Johns lyrics;

"hey kid shay loose together a this fall I should do something that you know should change the weather,
and kalifrida falk and fijall stick around"

and until lyrics were available we were like

Nope.  Neither of those, in fact, I amuse myself at the bar by yelling out "FREEBIRD" every time the bands ask for requests.  So far, no band has ever actually done it for me.  :D

Frank Zappa was brilliant..... or insane.... or perhaps a little (a lot?) of both.  If you do either right, it's impossible to tell the difference!

I am bloody sick of these songs and will toss out any band (and yes, I have tossed bands out in the past) for playing any of these.  Or, at the very least, I will stand outside until the song is over if it's a band I can't toss out, like the bar owner's husband's band.  Of course he knows I can't stand these songs and dedicates them to me when they play them....  >:(

A genius, in my opinion. The greatest modern composer, a cultural and musical reference. :)
