Got a Mora
on: November 02, 2009, 02:12:31 AM
Got me a Mora knife... two actually. What I like about them: they are VERY easy to sharpen thanks to the Scandinavian grind. Just lay a 600/1200 grit diamond stone against the bevel and give it a few swipes to maintain that razor edge.

That's a nice blade for the $.  I ended up getting a wooden handled on not all that long ago from
Lee Valley Tools.  Haven't used it yet but looks promising next time out in the woods.  Hope you
enjoy yours.

I've a few myself, though for the most part I use 'em as kitchen knives.

Quality and cheap! :2tu:

Yup, great knives.  I used my Triflex Craftsmsn (along with my Vic Farmer) to carve my pumpkin the other day.

Nice Mora line up too mate :)

Thanks, isn't it though?  :)  It's sitting in amongst a growth of cedar trees right around the corner from my house.
It's actually a stump and one side of the bark has peeled away and left the pattern you see.  I'll have to keep my
eye on it.  I know eventually the lot will be leveled for new homes.  If I'm still around I
am going to try and secure it somehow and drag it home.  ;)

Any of those are the laminated carbon steel? I've always wanted to try one since they are so cheap but not sure if I want to deal with the maintenance of high carbon steel.

mine is.  can't comment too much on it since I haven't had the chance to really put it to wood.  nice little
gaffer though.  I might put some "tacky" on part of the handle though just for a bit of grip.

Ah now I see the lamination line. Which size is it? Too bad there's no lee valleys here so I can't get one easily.

Two of my dedicated carving knives...an older (at least 20 yrs) KJ Eriksson 1/0 blade and a Frosts 106 blade. Both are Laminated.

My first and only fixed blade! I need to use it, but I never think to fetch it as I've usually got a folder in my pocket these days.

Someone said they make good food / kitchen knives - any thoughts on that?

Jz,
I think it's the 2 3/4 inch blade.

Dave,
I think it would work pretty good preparing food.  Did I read you right?  The Mora is your only fixed blade?  :o

Spork,
As always your blades are beautiful!

Well it's a knife and it cuts, that's about it as far as kitchen is concerned. Regular knives don't work well because they just lack the blade offset to clear knuckles against cutting board.

That and the fact it's not flat ground.  It'll work in the kitchen, but it'll never be my first choice.

Oh it actually works well as pairing knife, since it's much sharper and better steel than the average stamped sheet metal type.

yes they do, for reasons stated and you can get them and maintain them really sharp! (easily)
if I didn't already have really nice kitchen knives I'd be using my Mora's much more there.

watch your fingers! :ahhh
