FRN handles for EDC knives

Poll

My opinion of FRN handled knives (not FRN scales over steel liners):

Hate - cheap plastic appearance
Dislike - flimsy compared to metal liners or frame
Indifference - not for me but see their advantages
Like  - good performance at reasonable price points
Love - lightweight, tough, and reasonable prices make great EDC

I just have this thing that in my mind moulded clip eventually leads to broken clip.  I'm sure this isn't necessary true, but I can't seem to get past it.  :D

From what I've read, broken FRN clips are rare.  Supposedly more durable than metal or wire clips.

Some people don't like clips on knives this small.  They remove the clip immediately by cutting, filing, and then sanding.

My major gripe about the FRN clip is weak retention on thinner fabric.

Decent retention on denim and similar, but on thinner dress slacks or shirts, the fabric isn't quite thick enough for the clip to be sprung outward away from the handle.

Supposedly this issue can be fixed with a small square of skate board tape under the clip.

.

I am quite tempted as it is just soooo light.  :o  Nice steel too.

Steel seems very good for edge retention.

I've been using mine almost exclusively - a fair amount of cutting of tough plastics and cardboard which in my experience will rapidly take the fine edge off a blade.

Now it isn't quite as sharp as new, but will still shave arm hair very easily.

Could you take, or do you have any links to any in hand pics?  Can't seem to find one anywhere.

Sorry, but I still don't have a decent digital camera.

I'll steal a pic from elsewhere and post it here.

I'm going to give frn another try.  :tu:  I'm going to carry my 79mm Spyderco rescue for a few days and see how I like the frn scales. Maybe I'll buy frn for all of my knives too!  :D

Uh.... no!  :D  The Um is on my top five list of all time knives. It would probably be the last one to go.   ;)

The only FRN knife I have is my Spyderco Atlantic Salt and I'm really happy with it , very light weight and I like how the knife is quite thin .
Just how strong is FRN , could you say crack it on the Salt but overtightening the clip screw ?

You may deform it a bit by over pressuring but it won't crack.

I see , so its more soft then brittle . I suppose otherwise it would crack around the rivets .Anyway I think its a fantastic knife and I think its does whats its designed for 100% .

These pics were posted over on the Spyderco forums by a fireman who uses this knife as part of his turnout gear.

This knife is several years old and has been to a lot of fires with its owner.  Said he cleans the FRN handle when the soot build up gets too heavy, but otherwise it gets no regular maintainence.  ;>

To me, these pics symbolize what Spyderco at its best, is all about:  no nonsense, no BS, no flash, but tough, dependable knives for people who regularly venture into harms way.

Hot damn!  Yep, that's a great pic and pretty much sums up why spyderco's are useful, IMO.  Wow, great pic!

That is a good pic , thanks for posting  :D

I keep my one in the breast pocket of my Rescue overalls and because its so light and thin I don't notice it there . I couldn't think of a better knife to replace it with .
