Fallkniven U1 Cocobolo

Dudes and dudesses,

For your pictorial delight I present my new U1 with Cocobolo scales.

Here is the blurb

"Fallkniven have earned a deserved reputation for producing some of the best quality and usable fixed and folding knives in the world, partly due to their use of the finest laminate steels, advanced technology in the manufacturing process and centuries old craftsmanship. The U1 is a non-locking folder of the highest calibre. Using a slip joint mechanism it is legal carry in most European countries including the UK. 3G laminate powder steel means, as with all falkniven knives, the blade edge is beyond comparison and ultra sharp. The Cocobolo handle scales adds a touch of class to this undoubted leader of the pack. It is supplied with a cordura belt sheath. "

I have to say that this thing is SHARP......very sharp (here's to cut fingers).

It looks classy, elegant and is very much the "Gentlemen's Knife".  It will very much fit my "old school EDC" I feel.
(http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,14967.0.html)  Shameless plg  ;)

I have included some photos....sorry about the picture quality but its late and dark here.

It seems a little dinky in the hand BUT (and its a big but) its VERY comfy to hold.  The little finger is not used and I suppose its a 3 finger kind of knife, but it just feels right.  The back spring seems strong and whilst no Slipjoint is as good as a lock, it feels rugged enough and anyway, it helps teach blade control  :P

The belt sheath however is crap.  Too tight, too cheap and generally too nasty.  Bin the sheath.

Now I got mine in a trade for about £75....new they are £135 ish.

I am happy with it for the money, BUT I am not too sure I would be happy with buying one at a new price.  Its great....just not THAT great.

If you want one, my advice is to go second hand.

Any questions/comments are always welcome.

Nick

They do look nice don't they.  :)  What is a bit annoying is that it was only last year that Heinnies had these for sale BNIB for about £75 if I remember correctly and then the prices shot up (Some of Cold Steels did as well).  Should have got one then as like you touched on Nick, for £75 I'd be quite tempted, but I am not at all tempted at it's current price.
I'm back!!

I didn't realise they were that small tbh Nick. I had it in mind that they were quite a bit bigger than that.

Gorgeous looking knife mate.
I used to come here a lot.

I can't understand why they don't just make a slippy version of the U2 (which is half the price).
I'm back!!

Lovely knife that Nick :)

Like Ben I was tempted at it's previous price, but it's just too damned expensive at it's current price :(

Beautiful knife.

I'm aware that Fallkniven sells great knives and has a very good reputation among knife knuts.

Not to cast aspersions on Fallkniven, but doesn't it operate something like Cold Steel in that all of its knives are produced by other outfits under contract?

Don't know if it's true, but I read somewhere that most, or all, Fallkniven knives are actually made in Japan.

Nothing wrong with that if true.  Cold Steel and Spyderco both sell high quality knives made in Seki City, Japan.

Yes you are correct.  They once just sold knives then at some point they started designing them and having them made.  I know at one point they were made in Germany,  But I'm pretty sure now all of them are made in Japan.

I'm not sure what they are doing over in Japan,  But I know it works.  I EDC a Fallkniven A1 and It's easily the best fixed blade I've ever owned,  I use it very hard and it has simply amazing blade retention and it takes a super sharp edge super easily.  It completely ended my desire to buy any more knives lol.  It meets my needs so perfectly that any other blade purchased would just end up collecting dust.

If you haven't owned a Fallkniven your missing out.
