We got hit with it last night/this morning.  TBH it's not been that bad, time enough between snow falls that it's not really building up, just maintaining about a foot of snow at most.  Even here they're struggling to plough and grit the roads all the time so things can get a little 'skatie' sometimes.

I find it incredible how you guys can be so different, yet so close.  My road has literally filled up above the kerbs now and it is still going.  There is easily 5 inches on top of my car and I think people have given up driving down my road now.  It is still snowing hard as well.

Well, as I posted on another thread, I woke up this morning to seeing plenty of snow. Fortunately ( ) I am able to work from home, so no big problems for me.

Its been snowing on and off here for a few days, gradually building up.  Not too bad though, main problem is the ice on the roads. The big roads have been gritted but none of the urban roads so driving is taking your life in your hands.  I saw to accidents this morning in the same spot

A few miles out of town and above the edge of the Trent valley and there is far more snow, the school where my wife works has been closed the last couple of days.  Not like she's complaining though

It still amazes me how many people are rubbish at driving in this weather. I know not to unless I really have to, which I don't so it's fine! The are out there spinning their wheels and revving furiously on ice... duh... we live on a bend which slopes down quite a lot so I'm convinced someone will crash round the corner in to us at some point. I think skis might be the way forward.

What I love (hate?) the most is the typical suburban American soccer Moms all around me. They all drive the ubiquitous big ass SUV. They all get stuck in the same snow that my Pontiac Grand Prix drives through like it's not even there. Seriously people, it's just snow. It's not that freakin' hard to stop applying make-up, hang up the phone, and maybe pay attention to what you're doing because guess what? Just because you drive a glorified minivan that you like to pretend is an actual truck doesn't mean you can drive like it's the middle of July on a bright sunny day.

I drove professionally for a while and I have to say that in the bad weather I saw more Sport Utility Vehicles in the ditch than anything else.

That's exactly it. The high center of gravity likes to pull the SUV around a bit making it tend to "float" in the snow. Wind only exaggerates the problem. Most SUVs around here are actually two wheel drive (Hell, a lot of them are front wheel drive) but just because they are a "truck" the sheeple of the world think they are just as good as a 4WD. Ironically 4WD in many situations really isn't much better than 2WD and front wheel drive is often worse than rear wheel drive. Another problem is weight distribution. Depending on the vehicle most trucks/SUVs have very little weight over the drive wheels. The vehicle may be heavy as a whole, but can actually have less weight directly over the drive axle than many cars, which leads to even less traction and more of the "floating". Of course most sheeple don't seem know this 'till after they find the ditch. And do they learn? No, They just say "Thank god I was in my big safe truck when that happened cuz I may have been killed if I were driving a car" and continue to think they are superior. While the guy in the WRX passes by laughing his ass off.

And don't get me started on the whole "but big SUV's are so much safer" BS. Fact is they do far worse in crash tests than cars, especially in a rollover, because they are classified as a truck and have to adhere to far more lax safety standards than cars. They may score "5 stars" but thats for the light truck category. A car would outright fail and be disallowed from sale if it performed as well in some safety tests as a lot of 4 and 5 star SUVs do.

Very good points. I am still technically a "young driver" at 19, but much of my experience is winter driving, since it is like 8 months of the year, and I have been driving for 4 years. Even around here, people in trucks don't understand the whole weight your rear end for traction bit, like me with the 250 pounds of sand in the box, or people with sleds or sled decks. And so many people need to understand the winters are better for a reason, and studders are better still.
