Okay, stupid question: WHY are butterfly knives illegal in those places? They certainly aren't any more inherently dangerous (except to their owner) ::) than any other type of knife....?

Because of the stigma that goes along with them.  Street thugs in 50's movies used them to rumble, along with stilettos, so they are "bad."

Martial Arts movies deamonized the Bali . Sad really , they are very strong and practical . A Spyderco Endura is much faster for the average user .

A couple of the best are the Microtech Tachyion , and the Banchmade Morpho .

I just got back into balisongs. Had a few when I was a teen. Just cheapies but they were fine for my use then. Here they are illegal to carry since they fall into the "gravity knife" catagory  but we can own them.

Here's my latest - the Bradley Cutlery Kimura II:

Looking for a Benchmade 42.  :-\

Legally it's illegal to carry them in some places legally where they are illegal to carry them.

I bought a couple Pacific Cutlery balisongs back in 1980. Carried them for years then one was stolen and I gave the other away in the late 80`s.
What? Enablers! Are you serrrrious? Where? I dont see any.

I had two as a kid, but they disappeared at some point and I've never even seen one since.

Apparently the best place to find contraband is high school.

As far as I know they are highly illegal here, I've not kept up too well with the specifics of our laws.
