Did you ask about the similarities to the ?Sal Marino? (I think that's the name) tool?  It is the same design...

Hmm, question:  suggest to SOG to make an optional handle that can be slipped into the hole and slots on the Eat'N Tool, a bit like the Funny Folder by AG Russell:  http://www.agrussell.com/ag-russell-funny-folder-aluminum-and-aus-8/p/RUShhhFF3AL/  All that would have to be done are a couple extended pieces that fit the holes, swivel around the bottom plate to allow access and then back to close off the holes to keep the tool in place and able to be used as a true spork.

I dunno, maybe too complicated?

Okay, good. I thought the bit holder was raised on one side but now I see it's a cut out.
Definitely want one! The MSRP is what, $20?! :drool: :drool: :drool:

I'm pretty certain it is around the $20 level, and at that price point I think this is an exceptional tool.

In my second year at secondary school (i.e. around 14 years old) we had to make a multitool from a flat rectangular slab of steel. Great fun, and the end results ended up like this (obviously not exactly like this, since we were 14 year olds, but they all had a sharp edge, and similar stuff).

Dunno where mine has gone, sure it must be around somewhere.

Regarding the Bear Paw Eat'n Tool:  This from CRKT's description:

Quote
Our Eat’N Tool is the brainchild of New York City designer Liong Mah. At first glance it looks like the familiar spoon/fork “spork” combination, but Liong has used his ingenuity and computer-aided design skills to create a lightweight, high-tech outdoor tool.

Guess the version we saw earlier was a copy of Liong Mah's work... :think:

I'm not sure how a person is supposed to properly hold onto it in ordinary food-stabbing situations....?

you put your finger in the hole? :think:

Yup.  Just stick your finger in the hole....and it's a defensive weapon.  ever been sporked to death.  It's actually comfortable enough, but if you hit the guy in the face wrong you might bust a finger.

Yeah, it's an odd design, but still kinda neat.  The guys at CRKT are always coming up with some weird designs.  For example, this knife's handle is made completely from a single piece of sheet metal, including the lock!

It's an amazing piece, but I have to wonder just what the hell they put in the water over there, or what kinds of "spices" the folks in the CRKT Cafateria are using!

Next thing you know, they are going to be making knives like this!

I think that their plant must be located near the out put of a nuclear power plant.   So what's the price on the wood knife.  Very cool knife BTW.  Looks pretty far out.  I think it was called the NIRK.  Looks very solid and not too fat inyour pocket.

I didn't get a price on the wood knife unfortunately, as I'd love to get a nice partially serrated tac folder like that, only maybe made all out of G-10 or micarta!  :D

Frog, with an MSRP of about $30, it won't be too hard to appeal to that side of yourself!

Columbia River Knife and Tool says this about the NIRK:

Intelligent design advocate Michael Behe coined the term "irreducible complexity," which means "a single system composed of several wellmatched, interacting parts that contribute to the basic function of the system, wherein the removal of any one of the parts causes the system to effectively cease functioning." It certainly describes this new folder by Glenn Klecker, award-winning knife and tool designer from Silverton, Oregon. He has named it after his son: Nathan's IRreducible complexity Knife, or NIRK™. There are just two well-thoughtout pieces, plus a blade pivot screw.

The innovation is Glenn's use of a single sheet of stamped and folded stainless steel to serve as the folder frame, back spacer, spring and lock, resulting in a solid lockback folder. The geometry of the cutout areas is critical, carefully calculated to provide just the right spring action when the rear of the spine is pressed.

At the front of the frame, the lock tab mates with a notch in the blade to provide safe lockup. The tighter the grip on the handle, the tighter the lockup, making this an exceptionally safe design. It is very difficult, if not impossible, to accidentally release the lock, and it is very, very strong.

When the blade is closed, the same lock tab ramps over a rounded detent to hold the blade in the closed position.

The high-carbon stainless steel blade is a utilitarian drop point shape with a deep belly, high hollow ground for easy cutting, and with a swedged top edge to aid penetration. It is a hefty 0.131" thick. The blade can be opened with either hand using the oval thumb hole.

The 5180 sport and work model has a high satin blade finish, brushed frame and Razor-Sharp cutting edge.

The NIRK has a stainless steel pocket/gear clip.

There you have it: a simple, flat, almost indestructible folder. All you need to do is oil and sharpen it occasionally and you have a friend for life. It is priced so you can afford several: one for the toolbox, one for the backpack, one for the truck, one for the boat, one for the survival kit.

In the knife world, it is a fine example of intelligent design.
Specifications

    * Blade: Length: 3.125" (79 mm)
    * Thickness: 0.131" (3.3 mm)
    * Steel: 3Cr13, 51-53 HRC
    * Closed: Handle length: 4.50" (114 mm)
    * Open: Overall length: 7.63" (194 mm)
    * Weight: 3.5 oz. (99 g)

What do I have to say about the NIRK?  It looks cool, and is at a great price.  It's inexpensive enough that I won't have a problem getting one to try it out, and I don't think anyone else should either.  Whether it's a "good" knife or not, it's a fantastic piece of artwork, and shows what mankind has advanced to- I can't imagine anyone trying something like this even ten years ago, let alone actually making it work.  The lock up was solid on the test pieces I looked at and the blade rotated into position smoothly.  As far as the user is concerned, it functions similar to a back lock since you push down on the "button" in the spine to release it.  The actual workings of the lock are somewhat different as you are actually flexing the sheet metal of the handle/frame to release it.  It's really amazing to look at and play with.

What I'm wondering is, whether or not it will survive long in regular pocket carry- will the sheet metal handle stay intact or will it get crushed?  It seemed reasonably stable when I played with it at the show, but I'm looking forward to some "real world" type testing.  Of course, even if it does bend inward a bit, it probably wouldn't be hard to bend back out.

I figure it's nice and slim and riding at the top of the pocket probably don't bang against other stuff. We'll see, we will see!

The NIRK was definitely an intriguing design. As Grant stated above, the entire handle (including lock) is stamped from a single piece of sheet metal. Pushing down at the spot indicated below causes the handle spine to flex, lifting the lock sear and releasing the blade. Pretty cool! 8)

Its neat how a mechanism that looks so complex can actually be so simple. :)

Yes, it is another piece and the screw to hold it in is yet another!  When talking to the designer, he mentioned that he'd planned to actually fit the pocket clip into the design, by adding a long strip of metal to the end of the handle and folding it over, but for some reason (I can't remember why) they went with the screwed on version.  If Bob doesn't remember why they went this route I'll check with the designer again and see if I can convince him to repeat it!  :D

The clip would be permanent if done that way, and that might be part of it, but since the clip would simply be an extra strip of metal, it could be placed pretty well anywhere.
