My New Emerson
on: January 23, 2010, 07:38:19 PM
Thanks to the Godfather Gadgetguy I recieved a pleasent surprise today at the mailbox. An Emerson PS A100. This thing is a tank, and really opened my eye to the Emerson grind. I now understand why they use the chisle, and the sharpening of one is easy. Just one side, and a couple swipes on the other. All I can say is this thing is a chainsaw!!!!!! All I can say is GG opened a can of whoopass on me with it I now want them all!

GG is the man!

Mike,

Here is what Mr.Emerson has to say about why they use a chisel grind:

There are several reasons for the chisel grind. For any of you who have ever used a correctly sharpened wood chisel for woodworking, you know what a chisel can do. Although a knife is not a chisel, those properties, when applied to a knife grind have almost magical effect. A chisel ground knife, being beveled, (ground) on one side only, possesses greater strength, (due to increased cross sectional mass) and they cut with an ease not found on any other type of blade. This is because there is no parasitic drag produced by the flat side when cutting --- no drag points. On top of that, they are much easier to sharpen --- you only have to sharpen one side.

Me again:  :D

I personally love a chisel grind, but my favorite is still a good old flat grind. My next project is to send a CQC-7 to Tom Krein and have him put a flat grind on the knife. That would be ultra cool!   :gimme:

Ive had chisel grinds before and they seem to bind more when cutting thick stuff. A flat grind or convex will out cut them any day.

Well Not that I am an Emerson expert, but the 100 is not really a pure chisel grind.  It just looks like someone sharpened it more on one side. I know that sounds strange, but I was like you Mike. I thought they all sucked, but I am now now sold on the pattern. I actually cut my way through a 1 by 4 board very quickly with it and no binding or off cuts. It cut straight as an arrow.

No doubt about that, but Emerson's are a pure tactical knife and they were never really intended to be a pure cutter.  :tu:  My new Spyderco Stretch with ZDP-189 blade steel will kick the crap out of a Emerson in a pure cutting test, but I want that Emerson with me when I hit the streets.  >:D

It really is like comparing apples to oranges here.   ;)

Well as an unbiased person that has had a ton of Kershaws Spidies and others like SOG Gerber and more, I can honestly say the Emerson and the ZT are really the only ones that I can see me rotating for some time to come. These things are tanks.

I might even start looking at a PT soon. I know I went on a rant a year ago about Strider, but someone helped me see I was kinda being close minded.(GG)

I got them from someone here who had them on PDF files. Unfortunatly it is long gone and this is my last. Tommorrow I will scan it and set up a pdf file so others can make them. It was well over 2 years ago. But I think it was Bowen who had them.

Love the new blade.  :)  I would love a satin PE version one day.

I personally like the chisel grind especially when it comes to sharpening as it is half the work.  :D

You are not alone Mike......it's doubtful I will ever be sold on Chisel Grinds. They suck! I have knives ground as such, have used them, never will again. It's the reason I don't own and won't own a Emerson.

And I have to say, Mr. Emerson is wrong. I'll put any of his knives up against a slew of knives in my collection that aren't Chisel Ground and prove his "they cut with an ease not found on any other type of blade" wrong.

There is a reason why most manufacturers of knives......be they tacticals, slipjoints, fixed blades, friction folders, lockbacks, Kitchen Cutlery, etc, etc.......don't use Chisel Grinds. They make for mediocre cutters. They are great at scraping though.

Well I for one am totally sold on them. I think for any knife now that (I know this is coming off as mall ninja bull)I am carrying for a defensive purpose will be Emerson grind from now on. It really is a great design and really does serve a purpose. I actually sat down with the blade last night and came up with 2 things I want done to it. I know it will help in the use I plan on it for and amazed the Emerson Pimpers havent done it before. Now I just need to find a machinist!!

I don't know how true it is but I think the chisel grind does have something going for it. I took the A-100 and did some cardboard cutting and it went through stuff smoother than anything I have ever seen, next to ceramic anyways.  :o
