SOG Trident
on: February 05, 2010, 10:59:43 PM
I got a very generous freebie in a trade today - a SOG Trident. For all intents and purposes it's brand new.

I have to confess that my first reaction was a bit "urrgghh", but during the course of the day it's really grown on me, to the point that some 12 hours later I'm liking it a hell of a lot!

I just wondered what everyone else thought about the Trident, as it's a knife that doesn't seem to pop up too often around here, and I wondered if people hated them or something :)

I used to come here a lot.

Friend at a store across town carries one everyday to work. He seems to get on with it well. I do like the looks of the knife.

The blade shape is lovely, but the Zytel scales are growing on me too :)

i could see where a knife like that would grow on ya.

a good paracord lanyard would complete the mix.

Actually - just spotted a slight difference. "Trident" is written underneath the SOG on the blade rather than all on one line.

I may make it a lanyard later - good idea :tu:

I have a Flash II and it's a good knife, but I am not overly impressed with the AO on it.

The pocket clip is superb.  :tu:

Yeah - I think this one's very new.

I've been messing with it all day. The tip is very sharp (ouch).

I quite like the AO.

After having the Nitrous system of Benchmade and the Speedsafe by Kershaw I find it to be a bit pants.  I may have a duff one but I doubt it as many have reported the same as I, but it's the only AO system I have used that I actually think makes for a slower knife.

I'll do a vid showing the Benchmade and the Kershaw in comparison so you see what I mean.

I like the ergo's as well.  :tu:  I'd use and carry my Flash so much more if it didn't have the play I keep ranting about.

I like more of a drop point style blade for my needs but that is probabley better for all around use. I could see me with one. What is the blade steel ? I dont think I would use the cut out in the handle though. very nice blade though as all SOGs are very well made. :2tu:

Dave,
I have a couple of them.  One just like yours and one Camo, partially serrated.
I like them both very much.  Great blade shape and grind, good length, grippy
andthey are a light carry in pocket.
Unlike Ben I won't buy a knife that doesn't have blade play so I particularely
enjoy the Trident's.  ;)

Speaking of which, did you ever do that comparison/review for that old Blackout?

I love the blade shape on trident, but couple other things made me sell mine eventually. The groove is absolutely useless even with a freshly sharpened edge. Assist is nice to play with but really I don't want it on my EDC knife (one of the reasons I sold all my kershaws). Then there's the aus8 steel, while not bad it cannot hold 30° edge satisfactorily, and a 40° edge just cannot do what 30° can do no matter how sharp/polished it is.
