is there any thing you wont do!
on: March 21, 2010, 08:03:29 PM
is there a job that you just wont put youre multi or knife too?

ive had it a couple of times when im at work, ive walked miles back to my van or walk the whole length of a building site to go to my toolbox and get my stanley knife rather than just put my hand in my pocket and grab my knife/multi because i just couldnt bear using my knife.

these were to cut carpet tiles and trim roof felting.

does anyone else get the collecter  or the no shelf queen >:D?

Cutting doesn't worry me , overstressing the pliers is what I mostly worry about .

Like I said, if it's a job within it's capabilities then I will do it.  Each tool is designed for a specific job and if any of those jobs come up, I see no reason to use the tool that is in your pocket.

Not much I won't use my tool for, as long as it won't cause irreversible damage.

Some things should never be done though, such as using a knife as a pry bar, the is a special place in hell for people that do that, the same one as child molesters and people that talk in the cinema

electrical work. BzzzzzzzT!!!

not if you do it properly.  :ahhh

I will use any tool I own for any job it is capable and designed for.

I'll go a step further...

If I need a wedge, lever or hammer, and the multi/knife is most easily at hand, it gets the call.  EDC tools have to be up to the task or they're not EDC anymore.  Anything that gets broken, hits USPS for a quick refresh.  :D

electrical work. BzzzzzzzT!!!
If I can't be 100% sure the power's off  :ahhh, then yes, I walk to the tool chest for insulated dedicated tools.

Yup thats exactly how I feel about my gear too. Just because the package doesn't state that the tool is also a hammer doesn't mean it can't do it!!

ive never cleaned the gunk left behind ( im to lazy to clean a stanley, il just buy another cheap one), but rolls of felt have small particals of sand and grit and glass in them that scratch youre blade to pieces, and also they are all layed on a roll of bitchumen(i think thats how you spell it )/tar
that sticks to anything, and clumps up. :)

I won't use multitool screwdrivers to pry.   I have a PocketWrench II, Gerber Artifact, and shortened Estwing mini pry bar for that.

I use Vise-Grips and Dremel Tool w/cutoff wheel to cut bolts and nails instead of cutting them using a pliers type multitool.

I've only got one shelf queen, but I do have a preference scale for knives when it comes to various work, and usually keep a "clean" and "dirty" knife on hand.

Vic Waiter, Soldier, Helmsman = Clean work.

Vic Squatter, LM PST, Vic DAK = Dirty work.

(for interests sake - I sharpen my "clean" knives on a stone, and my "dirty" ones on an offhand grinder.)

Prying is the only thing I use my MT with care, that's why I'm thinging about getting some sort of prying tool like the schrade for example. But for anything else my Wave has to do it. Something like mentioned by I thought it was Mr. W.; eventho it is not made for hammering, it doesn't mean it can't used as a hammer  >:D

Being a bit of a lazy bugger, I generally will use whatever's in my hand for whatever needs doing. These days that would generally be Charge or a Supertool 300.

That said, if what needs doing is obviously going to break the tool, then I'll go fetch the right tool, but I'm not going to worry about cosmetic damage to a multitool. The rarities / shelf queens whatever you want to call them wouldn't be in my hand anyway :)
I used to come here a lot.

This is what the knife on your Supertool will look like after cutting roofing shingles and felt paper for a couple of hours...

I believe gasoline was used to clean it off but I honestly don't remember for sure. The only reason not to do this would be if your not comfortable with sharpening knives. Yes I know a Stanley knife is a better option but when yours rolls off the roof into a pile of debris then you use what is at hand instead of climbing down the ladder to wade through a ton of roofing scrap.

The blades and implements are fair game , but I'm carefull about the pliers , only cut copper , Grabbing is OK , turning small nut is OK , bending light sheet stock is OK , but I try be carefull about what direction force is applied . With the best will in the world , cast pliers will only do so much . If you use as you would use Chanellocks , Vicegrips , or linesmans , you will soon have very short jaws . I have never had to use multi pliers in a dire emergency , but rather as a convinience item , for applications where a second pair of pliers is needed .

If I'm doing something that may damage my MT I'll usually go and get a dedicated tool. It's usually cheaper to replace. However of course, if it's an emergency situation then I'll use whatever I have with me. Buying a new multi-tool is easier than replacing a life or limb.

Agree with you 100% DTH , dedicated pliers are far less than half the cost of a multi . If I'm gonna put anything at risk ( in a non emergency situation ) it will be a dedicated tool - which most probably won't break anyway .

In a bona fide emergency , I'll use whatever I can get my hands on . Cast pliers are much better than fingers .

For me my MT is usually a alternative to a dedicated tool, ie a screw driver of a set of pliers, but if i dont have these (and i normally dont) then i use my MT, i wont abuse any of my tools , but if it screws, grips , saws , then thats what i use it for, the other week i used the ST300 to cut thick roots with ,it was perfect for the job as there wasnt enough room for a big saw,but a MT is a alternative to dedicated tools, but saying that i do prefer using a MT  :D
