Yes, it's a bit like the way school children should be taught about the holocaust.

How else can we learn from the mistakes of the past?

Frankly, and this may offend some Leatherman folks out there, I always put the MPT on par with the PST.  It always struck me as odd how one could be popular while the other was dismissed as junk.  Really, everyone should at least give the MPT a shot!

Personally, I think nearly every aspect of the MPT is lacking in comparison to the PST.  The F+F isn't even close IMO and I found it incredibly uncomfortable to use.

That was me being nice BTW, I could be far worse!  :D

BUT, this IS a great collectors piece chaps.

I must have the exception to that then. Mine is every bit as well finished as a pst. The rolled edges are some what sharp, not nearly as bad as the pst though. Im not taking up for gerber by no means, im a LM fan.

I'll be the oddball here and say I quite like my 600 and find I carry it most often.  From the
slim Gerber sheath that fits onto a belt without catching on clothing right
down to it's super easy tool extraction when hands are frozen to it's leading edge
plier head deployment, it works for me.  :)
It's also a pretty kewl tool in Bear country where I don't need to carry around an empty
tin can with a rock in it to warn the bears away.  It's a new multi to me but I call 'er ol' rattler.  :D

The sheath that comes with them are rather nice imo.

I agree. One of the nicest sheaths included with any multi IMO:

I have an MPT just because it is a collector if it wasn't for that I wouldn't own one.

I believe that the PST is far better as far as fit and finish but then again that is my opinion. ;)

mine wasnt in a box or sheath. When i got it from Gadget guy he sent me a bunch of sheaths. That was the only gerber sheath in there so i assumed it was the mpts.

There may have been variations of course, e.g. you normally get a choice of leather v nylon with new tools, so you could be right :)

The label on my box simply states:

Military Provisional Tool
Stainless Steel Finish with Sheath
Item No. 55511

But, given that it was designed for military use, I'm sure there would have been a black nylon sheath option. The one in the pic above probably isn't ideal for a military rig!

As far as the f&f goes where are they so horrible at? The polished finish on mine is spot on, the pliers look more beefy than the first pst, tools are no worse than the pst. Mine has a simonds file that is sharper than LMs. And on top of that when they get loose you dont have to have a special tool to tighten it.

The fit and finish wouldn't be my criticism of the MPT as a tool (that was Ben)! That said, they do become very loose very quickly with use - if you see a well used one, they don't seem to last like the PST.

My "gripe" with the PST, is more about the design than the quality (which seems good IMO).

For example, this was Gerber's answer to the PST, intended to rival Leatherman for military sales, so they knew what they had to copy and beat. I think they came up short in a number of ways.

I actually find the pliers very uncomfortable to use compared to the PST, despite the fact that they have rolled the handle edges (which Leatherman didn't think of until the Pulse ST200). Because of the oversized cutouts in the handles where the nail-nicks are, there are some fairly sharp corners there, so it adds up to a clever idea, quite poorly executed IMO.

I agree that the file is OK - but compare it to the PSTs bigger file (in a smaller package incidentally) and you wonder why they allowed that into the design. In fact that goes for most of the tools, they are thinner and actually less useful than the PSTs equivalent (and there's less of them too)!

Simply opening and closing the MPT is a strange experience compared to the simple and smooth action of the PST too.

I feel like I'm beating on the MPT (and I suppose I am), but I do agree that it's a decent tool in it's own right. But, Like many of Gerber's tools, I can't help thinking that they could have done better.

This is of course all my opinion, and I do believe that any collector should have one of these, in the same way as I'd recommend people get hold of a Sportratchet or a Leatherman Flair. It's significant.

And I'm really sorry if we've wrecked your trade thread Jim  :-[

oh no you didnt wreck my thread, I pulled it out to use it and see if it holds up. I dont really even like gerbers tools compared to LMs. I was just curious to see why everyone thinks these tools are so bad. Like I say I havnt used it yet, its most certainly NOT going to take the place of my LMs
