Thanks jztml. I have been wanting to have a go at my Umnum for awhile now but was really afraid of messing it up. I thought what the hell.  I practiced on my Cara Cara2. Here is a shot of how it turned out.

How long does it take you to do one knife? I find myself actually skipping steps in sharpening now, since while that level of sharpness is cool to look at, it's not that much better than a "sharp enough" knife in actual use, and cost a lot more time to get it.

It took about an hour and a half. The repofiling of the bevel took the longest. Followed by the polishing. All in all I went through seven different grits. I took my time this being an Umnumzaan in all. I really didn't want to mess it up.

Thanks Ben for the compliment.

Did you use some sort of jig, or was it freehand?

Jig to set the bevel with the coarse and fine stone. Then moved on to the extra fine and extra extra fine stones freehand and tried to match the bevel the best I could. I then polished with three different strops at lower and lower micron count. All done using DMT products.

Thanks guys. I just did my two Spyderco Manix's. And I have found that taking a picture of a mirror edge is just as had as getting one. :D

In all serious I would be afraid of messing up someone else's knife. Especially a Sebenza that is beloved like yours. You should have seen me sharpening my Umnumzaan. Every stroke on the stone was like in slow motion. I so was afraid of making a mistake.

With my Sharpmaker & my leather strop I can get almost all my knives shaving sharp , it would be brilliant too be able too lop trees/hairs with my edges, hopefully one day.

I tend to struggle with smaller blades for some reason , my Gerber Curve & my SOG ToolClips small secondary blade are conspiring to drive me crazy, I just can not get them sharp  :ahhh :ahhh

kwakster those are great shots. My camera is showing it's age and I have to put a magnifying glass in front of the lens to get close up shots. It looks like you went with a lower angle then me also.  Mine is around 40 degree inclusive. What did you go with?

The edge on this Umnum has been reprofiled to an even 34 degrees inclusive.
The convex factory edge changed angles over the length of the blade, when touching it up on a Sharpmaker only the straight part of the edge could be sharpened; the belly was way to obtuse so only the shoulders touched the sticks.
Of course reprofiling up to 30 degrees inclusive the Umnum would have been an even better cutter, but then the bevels would have become quite wide because of the thickness of the belly.
And because it's still a tactical knife a little stronger edge fits the bill well.

Did you use your paper wheels to sharpen her?

What did you use to polish the edge?  I didn't know the Wicked Edge went that high in grit to get the mirror edge.
