Different grades of steel?
on: June 04, 2010, 02:08:51 PM
Hi all,
I thought I had seen a write up or link here, listing out the different grades of steel and ranking them.  Anyone got a link to that?  Stuff so I can compare, say...G2 to VG-10, etc?

Thanks!

I don't really see how usefull it would be , edge geometery , grind , and heat treat are equally important . I have owned some 440C ( a ho hum steel ) pieces that would far outcut the uber steel de jour , based on superior heatreat and design .

Guess I fail at being a steel snob .

The ranking would be highly subjective to the end user.  I prefer 154CM over S30v, but on paper S30v is the better steel.  Have to agree with Chris on this one.

Never actually used it, but I've heard its close to VG10 (another steel I can't get along with).

Currently, I'm a big fan of 9Cr18MoV steel of the Razel.  Takes abuse and holds an edge pretty well.  Sharpens well too.
