The Puukko Of Finland

Amici,
Have any of you had any experience in carrying the Puukko, Finlands premiere outdoorsmans knife?  I've been checking these out and was looking for some feedback on how they stack up in the field..

Cheers,
Serge

If you can get on with a true scandi grind there a pretty good knife :)

Personally I don't like scadi grinds though.
Give in, buy several Farmer's!!!!!!

Light , kleen , and practical , what's not to like . Most real world Scandi's have a convex microbevel ( due to stropping ) . The traditional sheatyh design's are very practical .

I like the skandi style, usefull, handy, simple, and real workhorse. Sharpening the first time not so easy (if you dont no how to....).

I have now 2 blade, i made it for myself, and my woman as well.

The left two.

One of my favourite and most used outdoorknives; a Kullervo Puukko from Veikko Hakkarainen

Although the knife originally has a zero edge Scandi grind, i keep a microbevel on 30 degrees inclusive on it using only the white sticks of a Spyderco Sharpmaker; not only is this edge a little stronger, maintaining it is also a piece of cake.
The carbon steel used gets extremely sharp and holds this edge very well; after an afternoon of cutting all sorts of fresh wood it is still able to shave the hair on the back of my hand.

The handle is made from real birchbark, gathered by Hakkarainen himself in the woods surrounding his home.
It feels somewhat velvety, is always warm to the touch and offers un unexpected good grip.
The deceptively simple oval shape offers a multitude of gripping positions, which all work very well without tiring your hand muscles too soon.

The Kullervo knife is a very well thought out little fixed blade, and it's definetly a keeper,

Specs:

Overall length: 19,5 cm
Blade length: 8,4 cm
Blade thickness: 3,0 mm
Steel: unknown handforged carbon steel
Hardness: unknown
Handle material: Birchbark with brass ends
Handle length: 11,0 cm
Weight without sheath: 97,0 gram
Sheath: traditional leather with built-in nylon edge protection

Birch bark, if you ever get stuck in the woods you can scrape some off to start fire. :P

But don't cut it off, it will kill the birch...  :twak: Just take a little bit of what you can peel off with your fingers.

@kwakster: beautiful knife!

Oh, sorry... you were talking about "stuck in the woods", so I thought you were talking about taking the bark from the trees in the wood  Birch bark is a great tinder, works even when wet! And when stuck in the woods and there is a birch I would take a little bit of bark from it (carefully, not to harm the tree) rather than ruining such a beautiful knife.

Amici,
Well I decided to purchase one of these handy little tools and today it finally arrived! This particular model was offered by the company, "Nordica Heat" on Ebay, and this puukko comes with a carbon steel alloy, a birch handle, and gaurdless brass hilt and a pinned brass pommel which is traditional to this style knife..

The sheath is very sturdily constructed, and comes with a unique belt loop/O ring configuration which allows the knife to swing freely which could proves to be a problem with snagging but it's too soon to tell..

Overall it's a very stout traditional blade and I think it will prove its worth in the field, trail or any other camp like duties, so stay tuned....

Cheers,
Serge

I love this man's work, JT Palikko:  http://www.kp-art.fi/jt/index_eng.html  He does a lot more than Puukko's though, have a look round the site.

He's also an extremely nice chap himself. :)
