Hunting knife and weight

I don't hunt so I have no clue, but is there any reason you want a really heavy hunting knife, especially the folding variety? I was looking at some Buck folding hunters that's on sale, and it seems to me they are intentionally adding weight to it. There's the liner lock, then two extremely thick slabs of stainless handle, then two more even thicker rubber handle on top of it. To top it off there's a thick stainless backspacer. In the end you have 8 oz of steel for a 3.5" folder, with a lot of weight that's essentially non-functional (SS handle and spacer). That's almost the weight of some large fixed blade!

So any hunters have any insight?

No reason that i can discern . To me ( speaking about the Buck FH ) , the only reason for a bolster in the Butt is if there is a second blade - in other words excess brass , just for looksee ! Some of the world's best hunting knives are the Scandi's - no excess metal at all . Who needs massive bolsters and guards on a field knife anyway. The Finn's only put guartds on childrens knives , assuming any adult knows better !

Gotta agree with Styerman on both counts, especially when it comes to the scandi blades, just love my puukko. When it comes to carrying a fixed blade and are concerned about weight, Nordic knives are the way too go..

Cheers,
