Surge getting the axe?
on: July 19, 2010, 04:53:51 AM
Is LM surge getting the axe now? There's a big sale on LM surge in a store chain in Canada, and most are sold out by now. Some people tried to get a rain check, but store employees say they won't get any more in since it's discontinued.

So with ST300 supersedes core, anything on the horizon for surge?

If it gets discontinued...

It'll be sad to see it go.... but on the other hand; the Surge IMO always had plenty of room for improvement.

Hopefully we'll get a civilian MUT to fill it's spot.... what would that be?   a CUT ?  Bah   let them come up with the name...

As long as it has the carbide inserts, hammer & long driver bits I'll be all over it.

I haven't heard anything, but I wouldn't be surprised.  IMHO, of all of the current models, only the Wave is safe, and even that may see some future improvements.

It would be odd if it was - they're sold at Wal-Mart as well, and I haven't seen any clearance sales there.

I can see why they would stop it but then there's no direct replacement

The ST300 is a whole lot of multi but lacks outside, OHO blades and of course scissors.

I hope they don't; I'm happy with mine  :tu:  :multi:

I'm sure the MTO management will get any info available  ;) :salute:

Wal-Mart isn't a good indicator...we still have Cores in most of our local ones, and they've never, ever been on sale.  I watch :P

The Walmart stores in the northeast of the US stopped carrying Surges about a year ago.  I remember they were selling them for $50.  It's my personal opinion that the Surge is too large for the average multi-tool carrier and as such there isn't a wide market for it, so your retail chains may be less willing to carry it.  I doubt that it would be discontinued though as it is a well engineered tool and definitely has a faithful market for it

I would surely miss the Surge if it were discontinued. It's a great multi, very useful, and I'm surprised to see it go  :salute:

For me the Surge is the best overall multitool in Leatherman line.
Its big, heavy and strong, heavy duty multitool.
I really like it! :tu:

There's another possibility thou, the store clerk could've mistaken surge for core, which is discontinued. And we know how much the clerks in big box store knows about their product.

At this point I guess we'll all need to keep an eye on the LM site and see what happens.. I'd like to see them fix the glitches or introduce something similiar than to see it completely go. But if it does, they'll be plenty of Surges floating around for quite a long time to come...

Cheers,
Serge

I reckon the Surge is going to end up with the ST300's plier head & all will tremble at it's feet   :D :D :D

Yeah, not nearly as prevalent as the PST, but quite common enough as to where they won't be rare any time soon. :)

Hey, I'd be happy with all full-sized Leathermans having the ST300's head, provided they can fix the fact the bodies wouldn't close completely with the thicker head. :)

Think of a bit of machined slimming of the plier head, like what LM did with the Sideclip's pliers to get them too fit, except the weight loss is from the side of the pliers not the front  ;) :D :D.
I hope it can be done  :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh :D :D

THEORY!!!!

Maybe they're not just doing away with the Surge, but possibly in the works, a "SURGE 2.0" to replace it?

It would be a shame to see the Surge discontinued as it is definitely one of my all time favorite multitools. I have a newfound love for my Surge ever since I modded them with the ST300 head. I no longer hesitate to try and cut anything. There were times when I would hold back, wondering whether or not I would be making notches on the Surge head by cutting something too hard. With the ST300 head installed, the cutting blades are expendable. I can either sharpen or replace them. It was definitely worth the time and effort. For any of those who haven't read the original post on this mod, yes, the handles close all of the way ;)

If it is discontinued, it has yet to be listed in the Retired Tools section of the Leatherman website:

http://www.leatherman.com/family/multi-tools/Retired_Tools

They are usually pretty good about listing things there as soon as the axe is dropped.

My walmart did away with the surge a year ago, I remember getting one for around $30.  I promptly traded it.  They replaced it in the display with a Core, and they still sell just the Wave, Core, and Skeletool.

Lol funny, my walmart cleared out core, dropped wave to add surge.

Actually, I made them out of .005 inch stainless (all I had at the time). I just acquired a sheet of .008 bronze for the sole purpose of making washers for all of my projects. Should have enough material to make washers for quite a long time to come  ;)

Evil,
After seeing several of your mods in all their evilness, I think your Surge was one of the best you've done..

I said it once and I'll say it again, if LM had the foresight and tapped you as part of their R&D team, they would have a much easier time racing to the finish line in the MT business..

Cheers,
Serge
