Sanrenmu 710
on: July 25, 2010, 04:18:36 PM
Just picked up one of these SRM 710's to see what the fuss is about.

I really like it. I think it is similiar to a Sebenza knife; I've never held the real thing but this knife feels right. It has a solid liner lock. The blade is very sharp and it looks great  :tu:

For the price it's hard not to pass on this knife. I bought mine from a guy on BB forums for £8. If you can be bothered to arrange a group buy you can buy direct from China for $4 - $6  :tu:

Anyhoo, here's the pics :D

I wouldn't know where to begin for a group buy but I'm sure if there's enough interest we could pull something together  :tu:

It is a locker as well, not sure if I mentioned that above.

I got one of the same from over at BB, they really are great knives.

That's one of HTG layards isn't it? I can spot his  rope workmanship a mile away!

The very man  :tu:  I paid the extra for one of his lanyards :D  Do you know what weave that is? Looks complicated  :ahhh

My lanyard work is ok [see below] but thought I'd get an expert in  :salute: I quite like the metal collar on it too. I've always like the lanyards with the skulls on them :D

I reviewed the 710 on my blog, I could copy it here, but for quite a lot of you seem to read it (thank you, btw!!!) here is the link.

Oh, if there are some really bad grammar or spelling mistakes, please let me know.
A great knife, I love it

I'd seen you make your own, that's why I thought it odd you had one of HTG's!  It's the same weave as yours, well almost. When you make yours you lay the cords at right angles to make the box weave, if you lay them across at an angle you make a twist weave. HTG is a twist, box, twist with the second twist going in the opposite direction.

They are less than $10 shipped to your door, not much point in GB.

around 6 bucks plus 6.25 shipping... but you're right, not much point in GB unless one person wants to eat the shipping costs afterwards :\

btw ebay is a great place to buy these. user is sanrenmu.knives. he usually makes the knives buy-it-now but he often auctions off the 710s.

I'm pretty sure there are places that's cheaper, I recall when it first came out on EDCforums not long ago it was less than $10 shipped.

I got a b4-710 and 717 in black,a couple weeks ago, and I love both of them.  :tu: They seem to hold an edge pretty well and both are very pocket friendly.  The 717 is absolutely  an EDC blade because you hold the frame lock as part of the grip.  really hard cutting and twisting will unlock it.  But I would happily buy more of these knives. and probably will. :gimme:

I can't decide b/w one of these and a CRKT Drifter. Then again they're all so cheap I might just get both!

Anyone know anything about the Nazy/Ganzo knives that exduct is selling? They claim to sport 440c and nice axis and compression locks which would really interest me at that price. The Bee and Enlan lines look pretty, too. >:D

I had a Navy knife for a while, wasn't bad.  Very similar to the Byrd line in terms of components and build style/finish.  Was pretty good... until cracked the pivot screw.

Don't know anything about the Bee/Enlan/Ganzo knives, though.

I believe that was about the Ganzo multitools, and it was in the other... other... SRM 710 thread. :P

There's been a lot of SRM threads   But I really think the general consensus was that the Ganzo MTs were kinda crappy but their knives were just garbage. Maybe my mind is playing tricks on my again  :D

Edit: Well, maybe it wasn't to the extent I thought but here is the post I (think?) I was referring to.

I've been wondering about those multis, too. Being very impressed with Sanrenmu knives, I am curious about the MTs showcased on their site.

Funny you should say this. I bought a CRKT KISS folder, and a Sanrenmu copy. The Sanrenmu beats the CRKT in every way. Better steel. Much better fit and finish, about one third the price, shipped. If I were Ed Halligan, designer of the KISS, I'd be pissed. Not because he was copied, but because his name is on a sub par knife while the knock off is much better and cheaper to boot. After several Sanrenmu knives passing though my hands, I'd easily buy another sight unseen without worry, and reluctant to buy a CRKT unless I could inspect it first. Hopefully, this will light a fire under CRKT's butt to get the house in order.

Unfortunately, the Ganzos they have listed aren't very good.  Basic, serviceable, but not that good.

As for CRKT, I've been hearing similar things from a couple of store owners/salespeople that regularly deal with CRKT stuff - declining quality over the last few years.  I used to have a pretty good collection of CRKT knives, I don't buy them any more, though.  The only thing I have left is a limited edition 24K Peck.

He is definitely talking about their knives here.

Err, no, just the multis - I've never handled a Ganzo knife.  The Ganzo multis, though - well, you can find the things EVERYWHERE.  Take a look at some of the pics that Chako posted of the basic Ganzo outlines - at least 3 local stores I know carry one or two tools made by them (in the case of Canadian Tire, like five or six).

As it stands, I've had very good luck (and quite like) the SanRenMus, and I think that's about where I'll stay - I really don't like buying knives sight unseen.

Edit:  Oh, and after comparing one of my 763s and a Drifter yesterday, I'm pretty convinced the Drifter was pretty definitely made by SRM - same frame, pivot and clip screws, same quality and feel on the G10, same size liners.  From a more subjective point of view, they feel the same when opening.
Of course, CRKT provides a lifetime warranty and the choice of a combination edge - those might be worth the extra ~$8.00 you'd pay for the Drifter.
