An obsession with lock strengths
on: August 26, 2010, 06:58:28 AM
Well... at least he had the guts to post the video after the fact.  Not sure I would
have.  Come to think of it, I doubt I'd ever do something like that to any knife.  :-\

Well he did take precautions that I myself would have thought was sufficient - taping the blade and wearing gloves... but still, poor knife

I think he needs surgery! You're right, that was a ridiculous amount of bandage. I cut part of my fingertip half off this summer and didn't have 1/10 as much crap on there as he did for that small cut

What he needs are those Kevlar/ring mail gloves if he so wished to abuse his knives in such a way in the future.
A little Leatherman information.

There once was a man with a knife

Who took precautions to protect his own life

But something went wrong, maybe he was just too strong, how will he explain this to his wife?

This is a simple case of a kid trying to look like he knows what he is talking about, and we were probably all there at one point- most of us just weren't "fortunate" enough to have video cameras and YouTube at the time!  :D

With knife ads like Cold Steel's PROOF series, Dark OPS' puncturing aircraft skin and communist body armor while controlling the blood spray, and that other one where the company used a steam hammer to pound their blade through 1/4" steel tread plate (I can't remember who did that) it comes as no surprise that people think there's a need for such extreme testing and virtually indestructible locking systems.  Just like how every knife nowadays has to have a "shaving sharp" edge and some fancy steel.  It's all fancy BS.  Yes it's nice to know that a knife will stand up to something heavier than it is likely to encounter in day to day use, but the reality is that these things that make it able to be pounded into a solid block of granite without damaging the tip also makes it virtually impossible to sharpen in the field, and makes the spine too thick to easily cut anything that isn't dressed in chain mail.

This is a tragic video, and I hope this kid learned from his mistake and doesn't do stupid crap like that again.  It's too much to hope for, but I also hope he realizes that there's not likely to be any point in his life where he's going to have a legitimate need to pound a folding knife backwards against a wood block.

That was sorta the average weekly wound when I was growing up.  :-\  He should wear a helmet too.  He could put an eye out.
