The awl. Why??

Hi all,

Why is it that the awl is so common on multitools and SAK's??  I was looking through SAK's the other day and most probably had an awl but why??

As I have just bought a '66 Wenger SI it got me thinking why this little tool is so common as I doubt I have ever used one on any of my tools.

So, what have you all used your awl for?  Perhaps you will give me some inspiration!

It's princibly a woodsmans tool, you can use it to drill hole's, pierce tin's, unpick knot's, use it as a scoring tool, you can even crudely sew with the awl on the 91mm sak's

It's one of those tool's that the only limit is your imagination, so I'd love to hear from other's what they use there's for

I use the awl for poking new holes in my belt... that's about it

You could also use it to sew extensions on it!

Awl, right?  I use mine awl the time as a wood screw starter, leather punch, probe, olive fork (once), scraper, reamer, poking air holes in metal lids (once), pull apart knots,  and that is awl I remember at the moment.  Maybe someday I'll use it to sew leather or canvas.  Some of what I carry is for situations that haven't yet happened.

I work at a TV station and I used the awl on my wenger SI to fix a studio camera, without the awl the sports guy would have gone without his close-up!

and I used it to fix the closure on my son's diaper bag.

I used it to punch holes in a plastic bucket to set a small sump pump in my crawlspace when my water heater exploded...

I also used it to jury-rig the mower deck on my lawnmower....

I've also used it for all the stuff listed above...

The truth is, I'm afraid to leave home without it!

Conkers are a dangerous weapon?  I hope they don;t institute a zero tolerance policy- the courts are overworked enough and I'd hate to see more trees get arrested...

I have often thought that Mr Fawkes was the only man who went Parliament with honest intentions.As for the awl I ahve used it for making  belt holes ,screw starts and for digging out the odd troublesome splinter(OUCH)
