What a nice surprise...

Well, had some spare change left in my Paypal account after a transaction, decided to get a cheapy little light off of eBay to mess around with, chose this one:

Really, didn't expect much.  Got it, build's... okay, head rattles a bit, whatever, but the threads, emitter, body, and switch are nice - even had properly lubricated o-rings already installed.

But... what a nice surprise, it's not a cree emitter (didn't expect it to be, really), but an Osram Golden Dragon!  It's got the white PCB and absolutely telltale Osram "square" zoomed throw.

Probably outputting about 80 lumens (at least, comparing it to what I've got), plus a linear buck regulated driver.  Only lasted a shade under an hour on a fresh AA and it's got somewhat of a cold tint, but hey, not bad for 5 bucks.

Apparently it's sold under a few different names all over the price, and yeah, they all use Osram Golden Dragons, or Golden Dragon Pluses.  Might have to get a few more and gift 'em.

Well, dealextreme sells a ton of cheap lights, some good, some crap.

If you want a good, basic,moddable light (1 AA, cheap Cree) for around $12 (delivered), look for a Romisen RC-G2.  excellent bang for buck, good quality host for modding too.
