Multitools made by gun manufacturers
on: September 24, 2007, 04:55:32 AM
I have a Smith and Wesson 44 Mag Tool (with tool bits) that I acquired new about a year ago. Its price is cheap compared to the price of my LM and Gerber tools. Its handles are Zytel overlayed and it doesn’t look and feel as compact and as tough as my LMs and GERBERs. It’s a big tool, longer by about ½” inch compared to my LM Supertool, but it is lighter in terms of weight. I haven’t used this tool yet and it just lies down in my cabinet together with my other multitools. By the way, my EDC is LM Wave.

I am now planning to buy another multitool, a Winchester but I am not sure yet what model. All Winchester multitools have the price range between USD14.00 to USD 23.

Your comments or impression on these 2 items will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

And they have a quality level at about half that.  I wouldn't suggest wasting money on the hunks of garbage with the Winchester name on them.  That goes for most tools/knives with gun manufacturer's names on them, as the names are licenses out to marketers who buy the cheapest, shoddiest tools they can find to maximize profits.  Colt, Winchester, Remington and Smith & Wesson are all like that, and I wouldn't waste any money on any of them.

If you want a nice firearms tool, I have heard good things about the Caspian PocketSmith, although I haven't seen one in person to know for sure.

Thank you so much for your sound advice, Def. I won’t waste my hard earned money again. I agree there’s no substitute for the high quality tools made by reliable multitool manufacturers.  I really love this forum. And since I am a newbie I took time reading all threads including the old ones. At first I don’t understand most of the acronyms but I am learning our language… multitools.

More power!

I hate to be so negative on those kinds of things.  If you know what it is and still want it, by all means get it, just don't fall into the trap of thinking that a good quality US made firearms manufacturer has anything to do with the cheap piece of junk tools that also bear their names.  Some are good, but most are monkey poo.

I have gotten away from firearm manufactures knives as well.  When I got into the whole tactical knife thing a while back I was tempted to buy a S&W knife.  Then I handled one.  Cheap foregin made piece of junk that I could buy for $3 without the S&W logo on it.

Although not technically a gun manufactuer Fosters knives by the same company that makes scope mounts are great.  The 1911 model is really solid and not to mention cool looking as well if you are into the 1911 thing.

The only firearms maker that is proud to put their good name on knives is Browning. The work is sub-contracted, but always to quality knifemakers. (as far as I've seen)
In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

I have forgotten to mention that one.  Browning knives and tools are great.

    WHAT - after spending a fortune on a new SIG 220 CARRY, they tell me they are going to send me a knife , I hope it's not crap - anyone get one?

https://www.sigarms.com/WarrantyInfo/WarrantyForm.aspx

PS: If you have a SIG fill out the form anyway , they may send you a knife, no expiration date.
Why do I carry a 45 ?
Because they don't make a 46 !

I think SIG knives are made by someone reputable.  I can't think of who, but I recall reading somewhere that they were decent.

They usually have the knives laid out with the guns when a SIG is spotlighted in Combat Handguns magazine.  They usually dont display junk in their publication.  I have handled the tanto SIG knife.  It is a solid well made knife.  I did not check out where it was made but I believe it will have no problem holding up.  It kind of reminds me of a cold steel voyager but I know that cold steel does not make them.

My buddy just got his FREE " Made in China "  knife. You would think SIG would have a decent german knife maker doing their promo knives...

Which model is it?  Is it one of the ordinary Sig knives or a knockoff with the Sig logo?
