Initial impressions:
Everything seems to load a lot faster... Since I was already running 10.04 not a lot has really changed apart from new versions of the underlying software I was already running. I believe the new Nvidia drivers have given me a huge boost (double framerate!) in windows games when running them in wine.

Nothing seems broken, something I did have to deal with on the last upgrade... when some of my regularly used programs got uninstalled... reinstalling them was not hard, and no settings were lost, but it was an unneeded annoyance.

They're saying this is "the perfect 10"... not sure about that, but ?I'm glad I already had the window controls shifted back to the right side vs their new trend of putting them on the left... above the file menu... redundancy anyone?

Noone else taken the leap yet?

Not me- I toyed with the idea of installing Ubuntu on my netbook as it's supposed to be a lot better than the Linux build I am using (Linpus Lite, a smaller version of Fedora) but I think I've decided to give Linux the heave ho.  I've been using it for about two years on my trusty netbook, but I'm upgrading my laptop, desktop and netbook to Win7 since I'm sick of running different OS's on different machines, and frustrated by being able to do something on one machine and not the other.  My laptop is Vista, my desktop is XP, my netbook is Linux and my wife's netbook is Win7.

Screw it- they can all run the same OS from now on, and I don't have to worry about doing something on one machine and not another because of software issues.

Does this version have a Graphics Safe Mode so it can run under Microsoft's Virtual PC?

I prefer to use Virtualbox :P

I believe the alternate CDs are meant for that.

I haven't switched yet, but I will be as soon as the new keyboard for my laptop arrives.  And, I'm not running Ubuntu on my netbook, it's a small version of Fedora designed for netbooks, called Linpus Lite:

http://www.linpus.com/

It's ok- I've been using it for about to years now but to be honest, I only use it for web browsing and some simple flash games, because I simply don't work with Linux enough to really understand how to do things like install programs, or use a compatibility doodad like Wine.  I have Linux for Dummies and have harassed a few friends who use Linux, but they are into Ubuntu and so can't really help me.

So, I'm ditching Linux simply because of simplicity.  As for why I am switching my desktop and laptop to Win7 as well.... well, they need to be reformatted anyway, and I might as well do everything together.

Anyone with the ability and the desire to use Linux should check out either Arch, Slackware, or if you REALLY have no life, Gentoo. These are all distributions (distros for short) that require the user to basically work from the ground up. Arch and Slackware do most of the beginning part for you, only requiring you do some things for yourself (like find a GUI (graphical user interface) if you want one, install everything yourself manually, etc.). Gentoo requires you to compile the entire OS for yourself, literally nothing is done for you. You are provided with the underlying code and it's up to you to make the actual OS, so to speak. This allows these distros to be extremely streamlined, lightweight, and custom-tailored to the user. I'll be honest, I've been way too lazy to do that. Ubuntu is somewhat bloated and underpowered when compared to the distros I mentioned, but in return you get a huge userbase, tons of support, and convenience.

My GF uses Ubuntu on her desktop (and soon on her new netbook). I've confined her to LTS (long term support) releases as it makes my life much easier (being half the way across Greece most of the time and having another ton of boxes to care for) and her not being exactly the techy type of lass. And all of my other boxes run either Debian, or RHEL, or some BSD variant. In brief, no 10.10 for me, thanks. :)

We have it running on the HTPC in the living room, seems quite nice (it's been running 9.10 since it was built) trying out the Unity interface at the moment and it's not too bad but needs a little work on it. Some things have fixed them selves which is nice (like MythFrontend not liking having a dvd in the drive...bit of a pain that for a HTPC!!)

I have a install of 10.04 on an SSD for my netbook which I need to upgrade, but it has it's Windows HDD in it at the moment as I needed to use it the other week and not got round to replacing it.

I dual boot between 9.10 and vista on my laptop...I like ubuntu way better but I just keep vista for compatability reasons. I also run xubuntu on an old dell.

I dont know if i'll update to 10.10, I'll just stick with 9.10 for now.

I recently installed 10.10 (dual-booting XP) on an old machine (AXP 2400+, 1GB RAM, 64MB AGP) and it is way more nimble and responsive than a fresh install of XP in all respects (from boot-up, usage, and then to shutdown).

The Ubuntu team really does some remarkable work bringing Linux to the masses.

hadn't seen this earlier... I have two laptops solely on ubuntu and I use it as my everyday operating system. one 10.04 the other 10.10.

good compromise between linux and usability. I play occasionally with other distributions but to do my work, I vote for something that just works and since I have decided I want linux instead of windows, ubuntu seems the way to go.

My netbook was running Linpus Lite when I bought it, which is a small, netbook version of Fedora.  It was nice, as long as you only wanted to use it "out of the box" as it resisted and fought different programs like Pidgin, VLC Media Player, and it really didn't like updating to FF3+.

I recently upgraded all the other PC's in the house to Win7 (except the wife's netbook, which came with Win7) and was pleased with the results on my laptop.  My desktop will likely also make me happy when I get around to putting it all back together- I've had a few other projects get in the way of setting it back up.  Still, my old netbook (older model) just couldn't run Win7 properly, and took an awful long time to do anything.

So, I decided to go back to Linux, but I thought I'd try Ubuntu- although I have my original Linpus install disk handy, just in case!  I downloaded the netbook version of Ubuntu and spent most of last night fighting with it as the install kept hanging.  I was not amused.  I tried it again this morning, using different thumb drives and different settings, and none of it worked.  I had pretty well decided to go back to Linpus, but decided to give the full version of Ubuntu 10 a shot.

It worked- it installed flawlessly the first time, and seems to be running well enough now that I have been installing things.  I've only been at it for an hour or two, so I really have no opinions formed yet, but I will say that so far it seems to be going good, and I am happy with it- again, so far.  Since it's a netbook I usually just use it for watching movies, word processing, surfing, IM chat and the odd email, all of which shouldn't cause a problem, as none of it requires any special or involved software.

At this point, it's probably safe to say that I'll be sticking with Ubuntu, at least for a while.  It can't be all that bad after all, since it has a little SAK as the icon for the applications menu!  :D

I tried a version of Ubuntu a couple years ago on a half-ass rebuild I did for my ex to use for some simple computing tasks. IT had it's ups and downs. When I get my new system built I plan on giving it another go. I was actually thinking about it last night and not sure if it's possible. Can Ubuntu (or some other distro) be installed onto an external HD, then used as a sort of portable OS? I mean I know you can do a bootable flash drive or a Live CD, but I was thinking it'd be cool to have my entire 250 gb portable drive loaded with Linux and whatever programs and files I wanted which I could then use any where. Not sure I'd have any use for that really, just thinking it'd be kinda fun to do and a lot cheaper than trying to get some theoretical 250gb bootable flash drive lol.

should be able to, but in any case, the OS will probably not need more than say a 4gb flash drive... and you can always have the 250 as a data store regardless of OS.

Oh, I know the OS doesn't need much space, I was just thinking that I would have plenty of room to install other applications, games, music, movies, etc. To be honest I don't know what good it would ever do me, but it would be amusing, especially fot those times I'm stuck at my parent's place or something with nothing to do lol. The real problem would be drivers.

Either way, when I build my new rig it will be getting a Linux partition for sure. I honestly really like Win 7, but no reason not have other options with their own benefits. I may try a Live CD of 10.10 to see how I get on with it in the mean time however.

yeah, my idea is more a why use a 250 when you can have something that fits in your pocket with everything you need apart from some media?

Oh, you are right. I just like to experiment with doing things don't make much logical sense lol. Besides I have a spare 250 gb drive now that isn't too great shape and I no longer trust with anything important. But it does still work so not sure what else to do with it really.

I'm about to DL 10.10. Are there any particular reasons why I should take the 32bit version over the 64? Driver issues or whatever? Otherwise I fail to see why they recommend the 32.

32 still available for those who still have machines that won't do 64bit imho.

I'm running 64 on my laptop and this machine :D

I would still go with a setup on a USB stick (4-8gb) and use the 250gb as a media mule... that way you can have the apps/system always, and the media only when you really feel like lugging the extra drive...

I downloaded the 32 bit version already, wasn't sure if there were any driver issues for the 64. I just burned the disk and am going to play around with it later today.

This is what happens when I try to boot into Ubuntu. It's the same from the HD installation or the Live CD. System locks and I have to power down the machine. Last attempt I had to repair the Windows installation to get it to boot up again at all.

Haha wow, the camera makes it look like there is some nasty light bleed going on. The screen is waaay better than that lol.

I am actually working on Downloading it again to make sure it didn't get corrupted, but I suspect it's a video driver issue. It may just not be playing nice with my GTS360m. After I get it downloaded and burned again, I'm going to tr and reinstall to the HD and boot into "Graphic Safe Mode" I already uninstalled it, and the Live CD doesn't give you the safe mode option, which is rather odd.

Well, I tried everything I can think of. Closest I got was using the "install within wondows" option, then booting into safe mode. it sorta works, but won't let me log in after it finalizes the installation. Both the 32 and 64 bit versions do the same thing. What's really really odd, is that if you look carefully, that's a fragmented image of my WINDOWS desktop. Even trying to run off the Live CD results in getting a screwed up image of my Win 7 desktop once it gets past the loading screen which makes no sense at all. I cant install to a bootable drive, can't run off the CD, and can only partially get it to run using the "install within windows" option. I have yet to even see the Ubuntu desktop after hours of trying with multiple downloads and wasting a few disks. So far as I can tell, there is no way in Hell this laptop can ever run this OS. Running off the live CD did once get me to a black screen with white squares all over it, and after a couple minutes it made the Ubuntu startup sound. Closest I ever actually got to the desktop.

The last time I tried it managed to reset my system clock back 6 hours, between that, and it actually damaging the Windows installation once, I'm done trying before it screws up my GF's laptop. Now I remember why I stopped using Linux in the first place.

That's very bizarre.

I find Ubuntu works well with Nvidia, both my desktop (9600GT) and laptop (103m) have Nvidia graphics cards... the only time I had issues was when I was trying to install xbox media center version on my PVR which has an ATI card... it crapped out ALOT, to the same point, I stopped trying... however part of the issue there is the machine is only hooked up to a CRT TV via S-VHS, and there's no real monitor available, but that was also with 9.04

10.10 upgrade on my desktop, and clean install on the laptop... both went pretty much flawless.

Apart from re-downloading and reburning, have you tried the actual cd integrity check on the cd? Also, what speed are you burning it at?
