Where do I buy a telescopic baton in berlin?
on: October 29, 2010, 06:40:43 PM
I'm traveling with bus to berlin in three months and would like to buy a telescopic baton from a good brand, I know there a quite a few from germany on this forum, could you suggest a shop in berlin where I could buy one? Last time I was there I saw a few in Wiedenhof in Europa-center, I am also going there this time but would like other possibilities aswell. Suggestions for knife-shops are also welcome, I am looking to spend max somewhere around 100$ / 50£ for it, is that reasonable? I dont realy know any brands but I dont want something that break if you hit the punching bags a few times with it, and it should hold up to being fired off quite a bit since I will probaly be playing with it alot  :D

By the way, before someone ask I realise that batons is ilegal in denmark and its a choice that I have willingly taken to get one. If this keeps you from coming with suggestions then that is totally alright, This topic may also be deleted if the mods dont want it up here.

Thanks alot :)

There is a Dutch knife forum that has links to here  :tu:

It is in Dutch but also has an English section too :D

I know it's not Berlin but close enough that they may be able to help you out

To be honest I think you'd be better of with a 2xAA/CR123 torch for self defence, as it gives you a few more options (blinding, impact, and restraining all being possible), plus is completely justifiable whereas a baton won't be :)
Give in, buy several Farmer's!!!!!!

I agree with Mike.  It's better to carry a bright tactical light.  It's not as questionable as a collapsible baton.  Plus, a tactical light is more fun to play with than a baton.  :D

If you want something with a good reach, you can always carry a large 6 D cell Maglite; swinging one of those around will do the same amount of damage as swinging a hammer or baseball bat.

This isn't telescopic but may still be up to the job  ;) :D

The Bed Snake is found throughout the world and its favoured habitat is the bedroom. For much of the time it remains dormant, but don't let this wrinkled reptile deceive you! On being approached it will be roused into action and its fearsome venom has few known antidotes.

Now, utilizing cutting edge technology, we have created the remarkable contraceptive device, the Bed Snake Bat.

Instructions for use:
Be armed at all times. On sighting Bed Snake, give it a forearm smash with the Bed Snake Bat, followed by two or three more for luck, if in any doubt at all, perhaps one more again?!

I already have a bat under the bed, its just a bit large and of aluminium  :D
I have considered a tactical flashlight, more specifically this one
http://www.4sevens.com/product_info.php?cPath=86&products_id=2466
But it has alot less reach than a baton for defending yourself. In case I should have to defend myself i would want to keep the attacker away, in that case a baton + steel-toed boots is quite usefull. It would mostly be for playing around with at home, but also for walking my dog at night. Sometimes I walk with a cold steel cane but find it somewhat cubersome. There's quite a few large aggressive dogs in the area. And also generally it would be nice to have something good to defend myself with when out and about in the night, like yesterday I got home from a concert at 2 in the night, and had to bicycle though a not so awesome neighborhood.
I'll check messerforum out, though the english section seemed very deserted.

If you want to have some distance between someone that might attack you den I would rather use pepper spray/CS spray/isopropylalkohol depending on what’s legal in Denmark, at least spray that contains isopropylalkohol is 100% legal in Norway and Sweden so I would find it strange if it’s not legal in Denmark also. A baton can seriously hurt a person and you can get in trouble if you use it, in Norway and Sweden (probably in Denmark also) a baton is listed as a weapon so they will probably come down harder on you if you use it rather than a cane or flashlight.
There is no problem that cannot be solved by the use of high explosives.

I suppose with any 'self defence item' that requires close quarters there is always the risk it can be taken from you and used against you  :-\

A small but powerful flashlight and a good pair running shoes should help in most situations  ;) :tu:

Have you considered a tactical pen?

Thanks for the replies. All kind of harmfull spray is ilegal in denmark and classified as a weapon aswell. I dont realy trust them either since I read quite alot of people say they dont work on drunk or high people. Blunt force trauma always does I would asume  :twak: There isnt alot of concerts here where you get searched, not the ones I go to atleast 100-300 people normally. And I could always keep it on the bicycle or throw it in a bush. I dont worry about getting in a fight at a concert, its mostly when going home. Else I can always stuff it down my ten-hole boot, 99% of the time its only the torso and upper legs which get searched.
I have looked a bit at tactical pens but I almost never use a pen (My hand-writing sucks) And I think they are too thin to get a good grip on, espescially with gloves.
I wouldnt use a pen or flashlight for pressure points since I'm not trained in that. But rather several fast jabs at the upper chest, ribs, collarbone, and forehead. Followed by a few kicks to the knees with steel-toes  :ahhh

I wasn't going to get involved here but....
Batons do not work very well on motivated individuals.  I have used an expandable baton a few times with poor results (legally).  I no longer carry a baton at all unless its for crowd control.  Pepper spray (though not 100 percent) does work better than a baton.  I am not making any suggestions other than, dont walk your dog in questionable neighborhoods at 2 in the morning.

I tend to agree with you on a baton, although for different reasons.  Our experiences are similar, but probably differ in some key areas.

First and foremost, the typical ASP style expandable baton has several features that mean they are not as effective as a standard straight stick.  First off, the majority of the weight is concentrated just ahead of the handle, not on the head of the baton, meaning that there's not as much centrifugal force built up in a swing, meaning less force on impact.  Second, force tends to gravitate towards the weakest point, which on a friction fit baton is in the joints, so every impact tends to cause the baton to weaken.  The loosening of the joints on each impact increases exponentially until the baton collapses on itself.  It's not often you have to make that many hits with it, but the fact is that the impact is absorbed by the baton, not the target.

Because of all of this, I'm not a huge fan of the ASP baton, and when, on rare occasions I do carry an expandable, it's usually the Winchester.

This thing has a giant metal head on it that at least increases the centrifugal force generated, and larger diameter means it has more surface area to absorb the impact, meaning it won't fail as quickly.

Still, I prefer a straight stick, and my stick of choice is the Rapid Rotation Baton:

It looks better than a straight stick, which is important as far as public opinion goes- when someone witnesses an impact or two with what looks like a technical weapon rather than a "club."  Plus, with a bit of training and practice, it is a fantastic stick that far outperforms a straight stick or the common side handled PR-24.

All in all, I'd rather stick to spray foam or even a Tazer like device, as it's even more certain and less brutal than even the best stick.

Not that any of this helps find a baton in Berlin though... :D

Oh yeah- the best stick I have is a 6C Mag Light named Wilma.  She's outfitted with an LED bulb, pennies in the tailcap and batteries wrapped in paper.  She also wears a trumble stop (large rubber ring) about 5 inches down from the head, which makes her easy to grab in an instant, and turns her into quite the weapon.  Plus, she's a light, and therefore, despite the fact that she's obviously outfitted for combat, she's considered acceptable in almost every environment.   >:D

When it came to my tool box filling up (my waist is only so big) I opted for Taser and OC over the baton....along with all the other stuff.

I'm a big fan of an air powered Kingsman Training Chaser loaded with pepper balls.  Tragically my waist has expanded to the point where I don't have to make equipment choices these days....   :ahhh

As for what I'm doing here, well, I will get to the MUT shortly...

From experience a large mag lite or equivalent put in a reasonably accessible area is often much better suited for your need.  Legal regulations prevent me from carrying a baton, or any defensive chemical devices a night watchman while batons are legal in my area, at night it's generally much easier to deal with someone even if they are intoxicated, or drugged with a bright light when you use it to daze or blind them,
You may also want to read up on defensive baton tactics especially joint locks and pressure points these same tactics work very well with a flashlight, kubaton techniques work well for smaller flashlights (mini mags etc.), using a flashlight as an impact weapon is generally frowned upon and can be seen as assault even when done in self defense, I've never used my light in as an impact device but if you talk to most law enforcement or the average self defense instructor they will tell you that even untrained individuals are capable of defending themselves rather well against a club, not to mention you can possibly kill the person if you strike them in the wrong location. However using it as a defensive device for joint locks and pressure points is seen a a controlled use of force thereby preventing serious injury to yourself and your assailant

In my experience a baton does not make a very good weapon and they are not very reliable.  I've considered buying a new one and carrying it on my belt for walks around the neighborhood at night but no real rush there.  The best solution is to avoid situations and places where there may be trouble.  Unless you're carrying a firearm, the crook is likely to have one up on you as they just don't care at all.

Sorry, I can't help with a shop in Berlin (I have never been to Berlin in my whole life...).

I have told you in another thread that a telescopic baton cannot be carried legal in Germany. It is also considered as a weapon for which you don't need a permission, but you have to be at least 18 to buy one and to be allowed to own one in Germany. I don't know if the sales persons in every shop care about it, but you could get in trouble trying to buy one. Maybe they just sell you one and they don't care about the laws. Maybe they ask about your age and they don't sell you one. If you get one and get caught with one on the street you are definitifely in trouble. Think about it.

CS spray and pepper spray are legal to buy and to carry over here.

Get a thick hickory or oak cane, paint it black so it's stylish and carry that. Cheap, legal and effective.
