Triple 8 knives
on: November 03, 2010, 12:19:32 AM
Good evening gentlemen and ladies.  I just ordered a Triple 8 knives S.O.L.  Has anyone out there used or have one of these?  They look really cool and also seem to be of a well thought of design.

Never heard of 'em till now either. The Talon and Rhino both look pretty nifty. Keep us posted on how you like it.

I will keep yall posted.  I think they are a great idea.  However, I am skeptical until I get one im my hands.  They look very useful and almost "sheeple friendly."

Nice and small. I also like that they are AUS-8 steel, it's my favorite "beater knife" metal. Decent enough for most things, and really easy to maintain/ sharpen up. It's nice to not be afraid to thrash on the blade.

The blade really isnt big enough to sharpen too much, it would disappear quickly I think :).  I seen the Cop tool model up close and it looks great.  The pivot is really heavily constructed, I like that.  I really wanted a good sturdy knife with a smaller blade to clip on when I am cycling.  Tough enough to take a lot yet not so expensive that if it falls off I have a stroke.  I am suprised with the fact that they only have like 6 blade designs listed.  With a folding design like that there probally at least 20 different blade types they could fit in there.  Like atwood style one piece steel tools, etc.  I thought it was really cool.

Let me know on it.  I have looked at then (on-line) a few times but to me they seem like they would snap at the pivot point if used for prying.

I seen the pivot up close on the cop tool.  I dont think the pivot would be the weak point.  Maybe the blade would be weak there.  Now, having said that, they do have a Lifetime warranty.  Like I said, I am anxious to see the model I ordered up close.  I was checking their website and they had a damascus model available for like $70.

I'm wondering if there is some random reason why we can't have them too .  Could have sworn Heinnies stocked them recently and now I can't find them.  Wasn't that long ago so they could have deemed it not worthwhile, and they had a few models so I doubt they sold out either.  Strange.

The Cop tool would be OK right.  Its blade is technically a chisel/scraper.  The actual blade part is really very small.  Even if I was a cop, I would not consider it a blade as much as I'd consider it a tool for opening envelopes or cutting clamshells or zipties.  You could probally re profile the tip and call it a flathead.  Heck, the blade really isn't long enough to hurt anyone unless they are highly skilled in martial blade tactics.

Well, I got two Triple 8 knives today.  The first one I ordered for a friend that was in town visiting family and it just so happened that it was the last one that was in stock at that site.  They shipped the wrong tool and I sent it back for the correct one.  I liked the design so I had to order one for myself so I did.  They both came today.  One got wrapped up.  The other one is mine, all mine.  Like I probaly mentioned before, it is a small blade.  Small but the shape is well, different it is double edged and serated on 1/2 of one edge.  The Blade is a lot thicker than I expected.  And overall, I am very pleased.  It makes a nice little utility blade for tucking away on your person for jogging, or cycling in my case.

Very cool looking stuff, certainly the type of blade I'd carry every day.  The problem is that knives with circular opening systems almost never get past Canadian customs.

I'm not a Canadian but for the life of me I dont see why.  Believe me It is not lightning fast to open at least not for me and not yet.  it actually does not technically "lock" any more than a slipjoint locks into place under the force of a backspring.

Locking, assisted and "tactical" knives are quite legal in Canada.  Those aren't problems.
What is illegal is a knife that can be opened by centrifugal force, or even looks like it could.  It's the same reason that Balisongs are illegal.

Wow, that is a rather broad interpretation.  Almost any folder that I own could be opened by flicking it hard enough.  The cop tool would probaly be alright.  I really could not consider it a "knife" any more than I could say a paint scraper is a knife, or a putty knife a lethal weapon.  However, I'm not a lawyer or lawmaker.  I'm actually going to buy the cop tool sometime soon.  I think it is a really cool utility work tool for opening boxes, light prying, scraping cutting open rlastic wrap.  Stuff that I would encounter around my house that I would not want to go get a razor blade for because it would waste time.

I've got a Triple 8 cop tool that I use as an EDC. It is thin enough to fit in my wallet and I've found it very good. It didn't arrive very sharp, but was easy to get a good edge on. Yes the blade is very small, but for every day opening, prying, sharpening etc it does the job well. I particularly like the chisel end for push cutting (I had considered a Razel, but favoured this as it is thinner so easier to EDC).
