Who commutes to work?
on: November 03, 2010, 03:40:07 AM
How long is your commute, and does the drive bother you?  I am looking at getting a job with about a 50 minute one way commute, but I hate my current local job and the new one would make me a lot happier day to day(even if it is a little bit of a paycut).

40 minutes each way in traffic, (much) longer if it's really bad. Doesn't bother me too much, although definitely wouldn't mind shorter. I set the radio to local classic station, and driving a manual in traffic keeps me occupied.

50 minutes commute is pretty standard for people live around here.

Takes me around 25 mins each way. Not to bad but I work nights and sometimes that drive at 12am is annoying. Gives me a reason to carry 3 flashlights though. :D

50 minutes isn't too bad.  In and around Toronto, when I lived there, the average commute was about an hour at the best of times.  These days, I live in Halifax, which is a pretty small city, and although it's laid out poorly (traffic wasn't a big concern several hundred years ago when the city was founded!) you can pretty well be form one end to the other in half an hour.

In my younger days I lived in London, Ontario and went to school in Scarborough, which is part of Toronto, and was somewhere around 250kms away from home.  A retired Ontario Provincial Police Officer and I made that trip five days a week for three or four months, and it took about two and a half hours on a good day- three or more in bad weather or traffic.  I'm proud to say I did it, and I'm proud to say we survived, but I'm even more proud to say that I'm glad I don't have to do that anymore!  After 8 hours in school in a very intense, exhaustive course, and five more hours in a car (which we later found out had an exhaust leak- no wonder we were so tired!) it didn't leave a lot of time for other things.  The ride was good though, since there were two of us, we discussed and reviewed what we'd learned on the way home, then refreshed it on the way in in the mornings.  In the end, we both graduated with honors, he first in the class, and me third.

Thanks for the replies, you guys are quickly helping me talk myself into the new position.  I pretty much have a position now with a ton of responsibility but not a lot of support from my boss, I seem to be just a tool for him to make his job easier so whatever he wants me to be that day, that is what I become.  I am a Manager, but I am finding out that the title isn't everything.  Especially when your boss sucks.  I was in Security for this Resort for a long time, and the new position is a Security position with a competing Resort.  It may turn out to be a pretty cool opportunity despite the commmute.

Ok I'll be the smart ass here, my commute is about 60 seconds.  ;)  And I'm not self
employed, or work out of home, just lucky.  Sad thing though is I have to take my vehicle.  :-\

I need to go to different supermarkets for my job. Today I first have to drive about 40 minutes to the first one. From there about 5 minutes to the second one, and 40 minutes to go back home. Tomorrow is worse, about 60 minutes to the first one, 20 minutes to the next one, and about 45 minutes to go back home. For German means that is quite a lot, most don't have to drive more than 20 minutes. Only work 2 days a week (currently 3, as I do 2 extra supermarkets for someone who is on holidays, 30 minutes away from home)
I don't care at the moment, as I don't need to be there at a specific time, and I can choose the roads I take. Listen to some nice music or my favorite radio station, and the car rides on LPG. I hope the roads will be OK in winter, I am afraid of that. Never learned to drive in winter conditions  :ahhh

Mine is about 40 mins each way and TBH I like it as it gives me time to wind down from the stresses of work or home and makes me more chilled out by the time I reach my destination.
I'm back!!

I'm a 15 minute walk, 7 minute bike or 2 minute drive from work.  I should walk it more often but I'm ashamed to admit I drive it on occasion cus I'm usually late :)

I am, unfortunately, a 5 hour drive from my girlfriend :(

I'm a road warrior as well. My first visit is about 30 minutes; sometimes can be over an hour. Then it reasonably short distances until home time. Depending where I'm heading the roads could be motorway or just standard A roads  :-\

When I'm driving through busy city traffic and everyone is getting angry I tend play my classical stuff from my iPod; keeps me cool  8)  :tu:

I've done a couple of driving courses with work and found them to be very helpful. I never really got road rage but did get smurfed off with stupid, dangerous drivers  Now I just pull back and let them drive far away from me :D

I actually like driving and as long as I have my iPod I'm quite happy :D With my last car I had to listen with the earphones but with my current one I can plug my iPod into the car stereo; for me that was essential  :salute:

I wouldn't let the commute put you off this new opportunity; if I was commuting again my fuel bill would be my major concern  :-\

I'm with you on the fuel cost. It's criminal what it all adds up to. Fortunately my company pays mileage costs if we work away from our 'home' site. At the moment I'm working 20 miles away from there so it's working out quite well, I'd be knackered otherwise.

I've been with companies that do that as well; normally quite profitable too  :tu:

Without derailing the thread, I've had a company car for about the last six years. If it was gone tomorrow I'm not sure I could afford to get one  :-[ Between fuel, insurance and maintenance I'd be totally smurfed :-\

About a 10 minute drive with stoplights.  I dont think I would mind a slightly longer drive, time for coffee going and de-stressing on the way home (not that I have any stress)

My commute is usually about 75 minutes each way and is a combination of walking, bus, train and more walking. Not ideal :D And lately it has been even longer, thanks to our fantastic railway system. If it rains a bit, it takes half an hour longer :P

With my previous job it was 6 minutes by bicycle :D But this job has other advantages :)

30-45 minutes depending on how many school buses I get stuck behind.  :-\

It's my motorcycle time, however (RARE stoplights) and I really enjoy the trips, as long as there aren't land barges in the way...

I currently live on the same block as the Hotel that I am based out of.  I can walk around to the timeclock in about 5 minutes, or drive it in a minute(i'm usually late too!), or call one of my drivers and have them pick me up.  They don't like it when I do that but being the boss has it's perks!

Dan, I have a 2008 Ford Focus and it averages about 35 MPG on the highway, so my fuel costs won't be terribly bad.  The drive to the new job is about 47 miles and I can do it in as little as 45 minutes, and I will hopefully be working overnights soon so that may make it faster.

Now it's a 15'-ish commute but it's been 30 and 60 minutes in some of my past jobs. I consider myself lucky now as most people around here are used to much more than that. What's killing me though is returning home after a long day at work and having to spend another 20'-30' going around in circles to find a place to park, just because the local population can't do it right...

I have that problem at work.  I really need my car available quickly because I have to be able to get to my son at daycare if he is sick, so I typically drive the short distance, but our Resort is about 300 parking spots short, and that doesn't include what is really needed for employees.  Never can find a spot after about 8 am until around 8 pm.

My commute has varied over the years/jobs from 15 minutes to 1 hour 40 minutes driving recklessly.
Currently it is about 40 minutes.
On the minus side, I will be leaving and arriving home in darkness in about a month.  Also getting home at 6:00PM means I have to be creative when taking care of daytime errands.
On the other hand, the trip to work allows me to start planning my day, and the trip home is good 'decompression' time.  Also, I am far enough away that they don't expect me to 'drop by' on Saturday.
And keep the gas cost in mind when taking a better job that is farther away.
      Good luck-
