Do you keep EDC spares?
on: November 16, 2010, 05:12:23 PM
A lot of collectors here have duplicates or, at least, several versions of the same model.  Personally I don't have that many duplicates, only spares of my favorite collector's items: LM Blast and Wenger MiniGrip.  However, I do not have spares of my EDC tools, which suddenly strikes me as being kind of backwards.

How about you? If, heaven forbid, something happened to part of your EDC, would you be able to replace it immediately?

I don't keep spares.
If it broke, I would send it in for warranty, and if I lost it, I would be kind of sad.
But I would have an excuse to get a newer tool  :tu:

No, but at the moment I'm EDC'ing a Vic Super Tinker so if I lost it or broke it I could always go to the local Wal-Mart to get another. Plus I have plenty of other options to hold me until I got there.

For some.  I have a spare Guppie (due to one being lost in the couch for about 6 months).  I have a bunch of spare Farmers (not really, they're all NIB of different colors or really old).  I have some dups which I use for trades and what not.

Wot was the question?

Nope, not at all.

Unpopularly I just don't see the point at all.  Go spend your money on something different and experience something else.  Just a waste to have another of the same thing IMO.

I'm going to state straight away that I think this is a very healthy and probably more normal approach to MT's, SAK's and knives.  I am slowly trying to work my way to this sort of thought process, but my OCD/hoarding tendencies seem to thwart me regularly.  :-\

Only one backup ATM, a 2nd LM Pulse, just because they are getting harder to find at reasonable prices.

One duplicate but I wouldn't call it a backup... It's the MT that lives in my BOB/EVAC bag, the only bag that doesn't get items rotated or even used.

I would have an excuse to try something different if I lost something. My compact is always trying to escape the change pocket of my jeans.

The pressure to buy some new knife is thinking, 'maybe this knife will be discontinued soon, maybe I'll never see this on Amazon ever again.' (having that problem with the Vic Master at the moment)

Not really backups.  I do have functionally similar items, though.  So if my Wave, Compact and EOS A2 suddenly jumped to hyperspace, I could carry a Bucklite, a Super Tinker, and a Tank E07 instead.

(...I think I need to upgrade my backup light :P)

I don't have identical duplicates of my EDC gear but again I have functionally similar back-ups/ retired/ injured reserve gears.
My current EDC kit at the moment and its back up:
EDC/ Backup
LM ST300 / ChALX
LM Skeletool / LM K503
LM Juice S2 / LM Juice CS4
Spyderco MANIX2 / LM K503
LD01 / (I don't have a good back up light at the moment, so I just ordered 2... soon to be LD20 and E01)

I get the feeling that I need more knives and tools...

I'm with you mate, too many goodies out there to end up owning two of anything.  Even if I had loads more cash to spend on MT's etc, I couldn't see myself buying duplicates, I'd just get lots of variations on a theme.  How many 1xAA lights are there? Dozens? More?  Money no object I'd buy 'em all and rotate my carry, but I don't see why I'd buy two exactly the same.

I do have spares of a few of my favorite SAKs, only because I was able to get them CHEAP in the TSA confiscated bins.

I guess it depends on what you mean by "backup"...

I just ordered an Octane for EDC use, and thanks again to all who offered suggestions and advice.  It will actually be my third multi-tool.  I had a PS4 but gave it to my wife for her 'utility vest'...  And, I have a very old Gerber multi-tool that I've had for nearly 20 years, but don't carry it because the pliers are too wide for day to day needs, and it weighs a ton...

I'm looking forward to getting the Octane, but now I'm starting to feel like a Strata would meet my needs better...

Oh god, not another sickness!!! er, I mean hobby.  Yeah, that's it, a hobby! :D

Big time.

Prepare for a series of purchases and sales that last forever.  You may find one that you carry more than others, or maybe carry full time, but it won't stop the itch, especially if you get into SAK's and torches.  Whatever you do, don't(that means do) visit EDC forums!  you will then be hooked on sporks and edc bags!  (I recommend maxpedition gear, that should save you some time)

I do have a duplicate backup light.  My daily pocket carry is an iTP A3.  Due to the frequency of my torches being robbed, borrowed or lost I consider it essential to have a replacement immediately to hand :)
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

1. I don't lose EDC items...

2. I don't break my EDC items (anymore!)...

3. I don't allow EDC items to get stolen...

-

I do have different things for different types of days, which get rotated, but no, no duplicates. Would be a shame to be sitting on a dupe when a superior model is released. Not a collector either, I just like reliable tools.

I keep telling myself this same thing and am really working towards not having so many dupes.  One exception I think will be SAKs because I like to have a variety of different colors.

While I don't currently have exact spares of my EDC*, since it does vary, I do have backups for various items.  My Spirit X, which is my EDC except for when I go lightweight, which currently, is almost daily, is backed up by a Kick in my bag; likewise, whichever SAK I carry is backed up with either a CT41 or a SwissChamp in my bag.  As for my personal stash, I have quite a few backups of various other SAKs that I could go to if one broke, though they aren't often the same model.

* I suppose my one exception to this is my collection of spare handkerchiefs, though I only really rotate between two to keep the others in new condition; with that said, I often just throw the one I use into the laundry, wash it, refold it, and put it back into my pocket, so it typically sees constant carry.

Although I don't have any in my current rotation, I do have a stash of six Brokers and three StayGlo Classics because I got them for a great deal; likewise, if I were to carry a USB drive, which I probably should, I just did an inventory count and discovered that I have no less than nine various drives, most of which I received for free from my father's various side jobs.  It's rather interesting, however, that one of the drives has a 64 MB capacity; I wasn't even aware that cards of that low capacity were still being made; I received it last year, so either it was really old stock, or some place is still making them.  Most of the others I've received from those side jobs are in the 1-2 GB capacity range.

Agh... I know...  I've already blown probably $400 on flashlights in the last year... fortunately my wife is of the opinion that they're so useful it's hard to have too many of them, so she hasn't been on me about that.  Now, MT's and/or knives is another story...  :-\

My Octane should be here today or Monday.  I think I'll give it to my son for Christmas as I've decided a Work Champ will fit my needs best.  And I'm gonna get a Gerber Remix-2 Mini for pocket carry as well.

With respect to the thread topic, I keep two of what I consider to be my most important tools with me.  A flashlight and a pocket knife or MT.  For pocket carry the Remix will ride alongside my Zebralight SC50w+.  And in my cycling bag will be the Work Champ along side with the Quark 18650.  So, while I don't have exact duplicates of my favorite or most used tools, I generally try to keep two of each with me when I'm out and about, and my pocket carry stuff with me at all times.  I live by the old addage "Two is one, one is none".
