Goodness, 11 pages!
Don't have time to read them all right now, but since I know you all hang on my every word and consumer choice, I happily carry an IM Corona Old Boy lighter in briar with brass trim. The best pipe lighter that I have yet found. I'm sure there's a better one out there somewhere, but it's probably made by some village elder in Botswana.

I finally read this thread! I've been meaning to but kept putting it off. "Mike and Bens Multitool shop!" we fellow
forum members get discounts and free shipping right?

I never did see Bens lighters (pictures are gone or expired).

I smoke (not much but I do) and I've had zippo's for years but like Def said, they run dry so quick. I use bics
a lot but their not as nice and fun as a zippo.

I've heard of ones with better sealing in them and their are so many
torch/jet ones, I need to get some more this year. good thread.

No, someone else has that one now.  ;)

This one, I think, is made by soldering the 2 half pennies to a brass nut which has then been filed down.  Everything on it looks hand made, including the screws and the spring for the flint.

I love that lighter.  It's really special to have a one-off special like that.  Especially since it has so much character.

Here is a sampling of the fully functional lighters I found in the past year or so along the side of the road and in parking lots.

So do I.  :)  Problem is, I am worried about losing it so I don't use it.

I can certainly understand that, but it is a bummer.  I'm kinda the same way with my old 1926 Imco Neverfail now.

Things that are engineered that well just beg to be used.

Yep its a fire steel a mate of mine made me :), we've got a lot of flint where I live so it's a good (if difficult) way of getting a fire going :)

very nice, I like it! you know I've wondered why we don't see more flint/firesteel scales/handles on more things,
like a SAK with an inlaid strip of firesteel that can be replace once worn. I've seen em, but not much.
Maybe when you and Ben open up your MT store, you can have that as an option!

A guy called Spork over on KF does a nice little Ferro rod mod on his sak's :)

As for opening a MT shop , it'd never work over here...we could never compete with the banner advertisers on price ::) :D

but there seems to be so many things you can't get (easy) over there!
and maybe you could be a banner "extension" with investors for a bit of the action!
some people pursue their dream job and sometimes it even works!

Has anyone else noticed that a spare flint fits perfectly into the little hole in the middle of the pad on a Zippo?  I had the "instruction" booklet for a Zippo years ago and don't remember reading anything about it. ???

I always kept a spare flint UNDER the pad, but while fidgeting with two new Zippos today and getting them ready for EDC (adjusting wick length and adding spare flints) I noticed the pinhole.  I might keep the spare flints under the pad still; it seems more secure.
