New EDC: Kershaw Cyclone 1630
on: November 20, 2010, 11:43:21 PM
Amici,
Just picked up a Ken Onion designed Cyclone 1630 made by Kershaw and I have to say that this is one heck of a folder! Although I believe this model is discontinued, if you can find one it will meet your EDC needs. It also has an open assist which is the first time I have handled a folder using this system. Other Cyclones offer an on/off switch for this function, but mine does not. I believe it may only be offered to the straight/serrated models.

Anyhoo, this is one beefy folder with it's black 6061-T6 anodized aluminum handles, bead blasted finish, sandvic 13c26 stainless plain edge drop point blade, and a dual thumb studs for ambidextrous one hand opening.

The Ken Onion speed-safe assisted opening mechanism can be activated by either catch lever or the thumb stubs. It also has dual 410 stainless liners, finger guard, thumb ramp WITH jimping which is always a plus.

It also comes with a reversible stainless pocket clip mounted at the blade pivot that I plan on switching due to my southpawness. the closed length is 5 inches, Blade length is about 3.75 inches, and the overall length opened is 8.75 inches. The weight for all you ounce fanatics is only 6.3 ounces.

Looks like I found a decent lightweight folder to carry on me on my next hike as well as a MT of course!

Cheers,
Serge

Kershaw's AO knives are seriously awesome.  Even the budget Chinese models in the lineup (like the OSO Sweet and Clash) open super fast and lockup solid..  I just wish they'd update the steel on the Chive and Scallion away from 420HC.
