Standard army issue cutlery
on: November 28, 2010, 01:23:52 PM
This was standard issue for ex Yugoslav army (JNA - Yugoslav Peoples Army), and a integral part of "Vojna Porcija" (Army Portion).

I know you guys will say - yes but now you have a various spork's and separated knife, but IMHO this is very good and versatile set.

Spoon - standard sized spoon excellent for soups, stews, and evrything else you can use spoon for. It is standard sized in volume (dont know about spork's) and you can get propper amount of food in this
Fork - well nothing to tell about this one, nice sized, sharp pointed, good shape for any type of food
Knife - a bit ugly shape of blade, but usefful. Partially serrated blade (3 5/8"), starting from point of edge and goes to about 1/3 of it's lenght (1 1/2"), and it is 7 5/8" overall long. It is made entirely out of metal which is bended so that you can fit spoon and fork in handle, also it has a can opener on handle, and it is more than decent one. The knife is allso very versatile and decently sharp (for a cutlery knife not mented to do anything else but cutting cooked or fried or baked or similar stuff) and good shaped for spreading anything on bread...

Set is made out of SS (dont know the type), and there were few producers, erliest one have been made very good, but later it was made less quality. Mine is fortunately made in earlier period and it is of good build quality (it has stamp "KORDUN ROSTFREI JNA" which indicate it's producer and period of production)

There is one issue with this which slightly goes on my nerves  >:( from time to time you need to tighten bended metal on knife handle so you can have a snug fit for spoon and fork, othervise they tend to drop out and rattle a bit....  >:D

As I have said this is basically a part of larger setup called army portion which is also standard issue and has few parts more:

- water bottle made of food approved plastic arround 1liter in volume
- small rectangle cap for bottle that can be used as a drinking mug or dish for smaller portions of food
- water bottle is inserted in housing which is made of two separate parts, top one made of simmilar plastic and is rectangular is used for larger portions of food, and bottom half is made of aluminum with handle (which is used to lock entire housing), and is ment to be used in food preparation, heating, cooking, boiling, etc. and for food consumption
- pouch with sepparate pocket for cutlery

On picture you can see how top and bottom part of hosing can be conected using a handle on aluminum part, and then on top of it you can fit securely a smaller mug part, so you have a lunch setup.

I have a full setup-actually it's the one I got issued while I was in the army, and I kept it since than, been using it all the time, especially knife and spoon.
Knife also have a bottle opener.
I removed serations from the blade, and I sharpened it, now it's scarry sharp.

That looks fine! And the cutlery looks stable but not too heavy. I have a standard German army cutlery, and it works good, but it is really heavy  :ahhh
