Getting Started With Collecting
on: December 27, 2010, 07:18:34 PM
I found this forum doing some research on a few Leatherman tools that I own, and it seems to have instilled in me an obsession with collecting Leatherman tools, particularly discontinued ones.  I have a grand total of eight (with a ninth on the way).  I'm also interested in collecting other multitools as well, particularly antique or specialized ones, of which I have exactly none yet.  I'm really at a loss for where to really begin.

I find multitools occasionally at pawn shops and on Craigslist, and just won my first eBay bid last night.  My question to you folks (and, I gather, fellow obsessives) is thus:  where do you look for the multitools you collect, whatever genre they may be?

On the Leatherman front, I do have the (potential) advantage of living in Leatherman-town itself, although I've never actually gotten out to the Leatherman store.  Does anyone know if they have any discontinued models for sale (as a sort of "until it's gone" thing)?

Thanks!

Also, sorry if this isn't quite the right place for this post.  I know this board is for sharing your collections and discoveries, but I figure that I couldn't ask a more appropriate group of people on the subject.

I hit the flea markets, larger gun shows and craigslist. And here of course. :D

Sometimes you get a good price on ebay ....other times they simply have what you want...but at a price

EDCsource and here you will find all kinds of old treasures...but ya gotta be quick.

It is funny my Multitool obsession started when I got too hold a relatives LM Kick he got for Christmas & my wife got me a Surge for my birthday in the following March , when she noticed my 'wow that LM is SO cool'  ::) :D :D.

Being in Australia I rely on Ebay(mainly US but occasionally Oz) & of course the Forum + EDC Source.
I was keen to get all the retired LM's & just need a LM Hybrid. Once I have a Hybrid I will have all the discontinued LM's. 8)

Fisting_Chili I think has gone too the factory store a couple of times mentioned they have had special sales, last year they had a sale for discontinued LM's.
If you see a reasonably priced Hybrid  :pok: :pok: :D :D :D

What! You live in Portland and you have never been to the Leatherman store....sacrilegious!!!  :D

Being from Canada, I get the majority from eBay followed closely by fellow members of this web site. I have been known to prowl the various local hardware stores, but those usually turn up cheap multi-tools.

Seeing that you are starting, I would focus on Leatherman for now and branch out later if and when you feel the need. Just be warned, there are more Leatherman tools to collect then you may know, especially when you get into the expensive Charges.

Happy hunting and collecting.  :salute:

On that note, is there a master list?

Leatherman has an incomplete listing of discontinued tools on their website:

http://www.leatherman.com/family/multi-tools/Retired_Tools

There's a pretty exhaustive, unofficial list here in "The great Leatherman show-off thread":
