GIVE ME QUALITY OR GIVE ME DEATH
on:
December 28, 2010, 02:50:29 PM
Hey! im bj ive been a multi tool enthusiast for a while now. im a leatherman man myself i use the kick as my standard sword mostly because the phillips screwdriver is unmatchable ive built entire ikea kitchens with it and god only knows what else. but i also have my back ups for more specific jobs i like the leatherman wave a lot for anything outdoorsy but if im watching my weight ive started bringing out the freestyle which doesnt pack too much but its got a quick knife and ive still got the pliers for deer ticks on my dog or whatever else lol.
so i realized everything else i buy is just a waste of money in comparison to my leatherman so im on a quest to create the perfect set of personal effects that will hopefully outlive me.
so i started trying to find a good pair of boots and i came accross clarks desert boots in beeswax leather and once i got those i got a shoebrush and everything else and i just love taking care of them theyre the best boots ive ever owned and though im 23 i have a feeling im going to be burried in a pair of desert boots(unless god forbid they stop making them lol) they were designed after boots english soldiers used to buy in markets in africa in ww2 and when the war ended clark started making them, also the crepe sole is one of my favorite inventions lol relatively eco friendly, quiet and pliable enough to let me grip rock faces with my toes lol
so the next step in my quest to find the best personal effects as to rid my life of clutter and bs was when i found the safety razor, hell anything that deisel and stainless that has already outlived someone fits my criteria lol i found a nice ever ready safety razor in a tin for like 10 bucks on ebay but if i can find the whole millitary set up i may just upgrade lol and again i feel that its eco friendly because im not just throwing away a plastic one every week another part of my criteria is that it has to be migrant worthy i like to travel and id like to be able to stick these 10 things in a nice backpack and be all packed lol
but now ive hit a wall because we've lost the quality craftsmanship of the old days its difficult to find things that match my criteria and i dont even know what effect to start looking for next ive been looking at like western belts and i definately want to get one made or even make it myself does anyone else have anything to add by any chance?
i found this site because i wrote leatherman safety razor into google and seemed to have found a community of guys who crave quality as much as i do so id love to hear any suggestions, but i may be taking this to far and just recluttering with quality lol but until i feel cluttered again id love to hear what other people are doing to replace their modern bs with bad assness lol thanks guys!
if no one gets around to reading this thats cool im just trying to keep myself moving on my quest lol but if you did than thanks :-D happy multitoolin :-D

Welcome to the forums beejay! My second multi ever purchased, and I carried it around
for a few years before I joined up here, was the Leatherman Kick, and mainly because of
a good assortment of tools + light carry weight.

Welcome beejay!
In today's disposable throw away society, your focus on minimalsm and long lasting quality is admirable.

Welcome to the forum Beej.
I think you'll find that folks here are quite committed to quality, but willing to accept a little less than the best if it means getting the job done. We are all pretty big proponents of the old saying "Buy quality and only cry once."
To that end, if you are having trouble finding any clothing items that live up to your expectations, I would suggest you check out some of the stuff from Tilley Endurables at
www.tilley.com
. Their clothing is expensive, but you'll probably be leaving most of it to your grandkids so they represent an excellent value!
While I'm not a tree hugger myself, I certainly understand the cost savings of being ecologically sound. Of course, I drive an old Jeep with terrible gas mileage so you can tell I'm not hard core about it! Still, I can certainly appreciate the need for reducing clutter and garbage, and I have no patience for cheap tools, despite the fact that I get giant tool sets from my in-laws each year for Christmas that are so bad even Wal Mart won't put their name on it!
Stick around for a bit- I look forward to reading more of your thoughts.

WOAH!! lol being a member of less important forums i am amazed at your friendliness lol honeslty after writing all of that i was completely embarrassed and i explained to my girlfriend that i cant post things directly after waking up because i just go to town on the keyboard lol so i was completely expecting someone to be like "wow dude i know we dig tools here but you my friend are too big a tool for this website" lol
thanks grant for sending the link, i guess i was perfectly clear because leaving stuff to the grandkids is totaly what im about lol tilley is now book marked and when im done here il prolly drop my whole paycheck on a new get up lol ive been looking into like hemp jeans and stuff but im not sure if the price is worth the durability or if its just a gimmic for stoners lol maybe il do some experiments and post my findings lol
and thanks stack! lol maybe someday ive got a headlamp i used on the appalachian trail so when that craps out il think about it but to be totaly honest i havent used it or any other flashlight since lol i usually have a lighter on hand if need be....but i should get myself an antique zippo or something
speaking of the appalachian trail thats where my very first leatherman is hanging it was a kick i had for 2-3 years and i tried to hang a bear bag and failed lol it spun around the branch one too many times and is most likely still hanging on the southern side of woody gap over the picnic tables lol that night we stuck our bearbag in the bathroom with a note begging people not to eat our food lol
and thanks crouton! lol i had no idea that there was something called edc gear lol i google pictured it and im in awe :-D and it reminds me of my backpack i got the newer camelback hawg in black only because i saw it in the store and could not be without that kind of backpack quality lol my girlfriend ran it over in the car and dragged it down our long driveway and after wiping off some dirt i realized there wasnt a scratch on it lol but for $120 you get what you pay for lol
thanks sean! i read the review for the kick and it was like good for kids or a woman to carry in her purse lol and i was a little disappointed lol glad to hear there are other kick lovers :-D
thanks j-sews for the kind words :-D and thank you everyone else for being so damn friendly and welcoming :-D i couldnt believe there were so many replies :-D

It's a well known fact that old stuff was made to be tough and last longer than the user. My grandma had the same fridge and washing machine for over 10 years without a single problem
New stuff is built to break and be replaced every few years...

Welcome beejay12354, yes i believe 'Planned obsolescence' is the term for what you are describing when you mention "we've lost the quality craftsmanship of the old days" -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planned_obsolescence
i think that through this forum and it's super helpful and friendly members you will find that this is actually a myth perpetuated by mass consumption and rapid manufacturing processes, not everything in the world is this way and many fine quality long lasting and hard-wearing goods are still available in this day and age.
With that said, your Camelback Hawg is testament that not all modern manufacturing processes produce poor quality items, in fact with the Materials and technology available to designers and manufacturers today it is possible to produce goods of equal or superior quality to those of 'times gone by', unfortunately within a consumer society making 'stuff that lasts a lifetime' is not actually very sound 'business policy', hence the existence of planned obsolescence.
Again, from another new member, welcome.
