Ipod Touch
on: January 26, 2011, 04:25:48 AM
Im considering getting an Ipod Touch (latest version with facetime). Anyone have any experiance with them? Im primarily getting it for when I travel in order to chat face to face with the kids at home. And I want some games and stuff to keep me occupied.

Any thoughts or pros and cons would be appreciated.

They are great gadgets.  The web browser is the best portable web experience out there.  The app store has tons of apps for wasting time during travel layovers.  The email functionality is great as long as you have a Wifi connection available.

Face time is actually a bit of a drag for me, but then again I don't travel.  Facetime does work passably for a video call, but the quality isn't great.  Just don't expect video conference codec quality.

Overall the iPod touch represents a great value for the money.  It's a small package with lots of functionality.

FYI a new iPad will likely be released in April which will probably have facetime capability.  The larger form factor makes it less portable but much more usable.

Ive looked at the Ipad but not ready to drop that kind of cash yet. The touch seems a decent price and we will end up getting 3 of them. The oldest had the last Touch version but dont ask what happened to it. I really liked it but only played with it once.

Thanks for the feedback.

I forgot to mention a great time waster that can be very informative as well.

The iPod touch can play audio and video podcasts and can download them directly from the iPod touch.  Also there is something called iTunes University where you can download actual college lectures to view or listen to on the iPod touch.

You can also do IM. There is an app for all major IM clients.

Also I recommend the free version of the Teamviewer Phone app that will allow you to control your home PC from the iPod touch with full desktop control in case the kids need PC help while you are away.

I'd recommend the following apps:
Rhapsody (all the music you can download and store for $10 a month)
Soundhound (for identifying music you hear while traveling)
Flixter
Imdb
CraigsPro (for cruising Craigslist for Leatherman tool deals while traveling)
Pulse News Reader (great news aggregator client)
Tapatalk (for browsing Multitool.org the easy way on the iPod touch)
Netflix (for using your home netflix account to watch movies on the iPod touch)
Yelp (for finding good places to eat)
Urban Spoon (for finding good places to eat)
Pandora (free streaming music)
Teamviewer (free PC or Mac control app)

Game recommendations upon request.

I love my Ipod touch and highly recommend one.  You can do pretty much anything with one.  I even have a app to make phone calls. You can get movies, tv shows, music, books pretty much anything on it from Itunes and the app store.  Browsing the web is really easy as well. The games are great for wasting time and some of the newer games are actually really long and have in depth story lines. Overall I would recommend one.

Lets say a 12 year old isnt as responsible as she thinks. Its been lost and found more than a dozen times, the last time it wasnt found. She bought and paid for it with her own money but still couldnt manage to hang on to it.

My wife has the newest version of the Ipod Touch and loves it.  She uses it daily and has used the Facetime application to speak with her friend who has an Ipod Touch, too.

The email viewer won't let her view the attachments I sent her, but we haven't explored that further.

might i recommend archos android based tablets?  i think the best one is the archos 70, which is a 7 inch display with a front facing camera.  slightly larger but still more usable then an iDevice (i have an ipad and sadly im not too impressed with it)

Highly recommended!! I'm still using my 1st gen Touch (so can't comment on this new fangled FaceTime thing) but it's probably the gadget I use the most.

Pros:
Excellent web browser. If you just want to quickly check something I find it easier than going to the PC laptop
Email integration. Lets you pick up email from all the major providers (GMail, Hotmail, Yahoo etc.) with minimal config
Size. Super slim and easily pocketable
Massive amount of accessories. I've got a DAB radio dock for mine and it pretty much serves as our main music player in the house
Apps. There's an awfull lot of rubbish out there but plenty of gems for free/pennies.

Cons:
Can't think of any to be honest. The battery life might be a bit rubbish but I rarely notice as it's docked and charging on the rare occasions I'm not using it

Still looking at these. One question does anyone know if you can do facetime anytime or anywhere? I am mainly thinking when i go out of country.

Thanks again

I tried to order one thru walmart.com but they wouldnt ship to my home just site to store. If I would get it from the store It would be $10 more and with out the added accessories. I hate waiting for things.

My 6 year old iPod NANO has seen better days, still works for playing music over the truck stereo via AUX cable.  BUT that’s all a NANO can do. Amazon had some new iPod Touch's ( 4th GEN ) on special last week so I picked an 8GB model for $175 and it should be delivered today.
Why do I carry a 45 ?
Because they don't make a 46 !

My 15 year old Daughter has one of these . I'm very impressed with it I'd love one myself . It actually had a software crash and died lastnight  :(  We thought it was dead as it wouldn't power on . Phoned up the Apple helpline and they talked me through the rebooting process .I couldn't believe how helpfull they were . They really offer a wonderfull backup and help line service .The facetime thing is great as she uses it to talk to her boyfriend and saves our phone bill  :tu:

i've never used the apple phone service but i always thought you only got it for 60 days...

anyway to reboot all you need to do is hold down the power button and the home button at the same time until something happens- or connecting to itunes normally does the trick

Apple's service is great, especially if you have an Apple store in your area. You can set an appointment time on their website, walk in at that time and they will be expecting you. I had a 1st gen iPod Touch start acting funny a couple of weeks before the warranty was up. I walked in and they gave me a new one of the same model. I didn't even have a receipt because it was a gift.

An iPod Touch is totally worth it. So many things you can do with one. Just be sure to get a case skin for it if you're leaving the hous with it. One drop on hard pavement and it's over.

My sister wanted to buy one but got a new Iphone instead. Costs not much more and you can make phone calls as well if you want to. It seems that since the Iphone, the Ipod touch gets a bit redundant if you ask me.

Yes, in the U.S. at least, if you already have a Verizon or AT&T cell phone contract, the iPhone is very inexpensive. But you can't buy a new iPhone without buying the long term contract too. Well, I take that back... In the past year, Apple did sell some of their iPhones without a contract, but the price was very high. Like $500 I think.
