Swisstool or Core or PowerLock ( revised)
on: November 20, 2007, 03:26:12 AM
Which do you all prefer. I personally prefer the core.) But next in line would have to be the PowerLock! I love the compound leverage! The swisstool would probably be second if it did not have the spring tension ( I cut my nails short) and when I do have them they get all ripped up from it. Personally I don't like how the serrated blade is not sheepsfoot ( on std).

Well this argument is about a century old, but I stil prefer the SwissTool. It is much more corrosion resistant, it is sturdier, and in my opinion, the tools work better (i.e. the serrated blade, can opener, etc.).

The Core is alright, but I'd much rather have a SwissTool or a PowerLock on my side. :multi:

Guess  ;)  I've no intention of EDCing another Multitool at the moment . Over the last 8 years I've put Swisstools through some things they proberbly werent ment for . We've had a couple of adventures which I'm sure I've bored you all with before and a couple that I havnt told anyone yet but they can wait till a cold wet winters night and a glass of rum  ::) Anyway they have never let me down . I think its the pliers that does it . I know there not needle nose but I have cranked down on them with two hands as hard as I could more then once .I have EDCed other tools alongside a Swisstool , Gerber 600 , LM Charge Ti , Sog Powerlock , Spirit,  Gerber Freehand and a LM Supertool 200 but found them all lacking in one way or another .Thats not to say I've given up on other multitools , I'm still looking for the perfect EDC .

Not necessarily, but the argument is always Core or SwissTool- and the PowerLock is a significant contender in that section too, so I'd hate to see it left out.

Very true.

I have to say, I am slightly put off buying a swisstool at the moment.  You know what they say about meeting your heroes!  :)

The SwissTool holds up well to the hype surrounding it, otherwise I think the hype would have died down long ago.  Let's face it, Victorinox knows tools.  They've been doing it for over 100 years and they know what works and what doesn't, and they aren't affected by market trends.  They were about 15 years "late" to the multitool market and despite only having two basic designs, they consistently rank at or near the top of just about everyone's list of "best" tools.

And, whenever a comparison question comes up, the SwissTool is almost always listed as the tool to beat.  Check out Bladeforums, Knifeforums, British Blades, EDCForums etc and you'll see that as often as not the question is almost always "Multitool X or SwissTool?"  If the SwissTool didn't deliver what was promised then I seriously doubt that they would be regarded nearly as highly as they are- remember, forums are all about personal experiences and not about sucking up to manufacturers to get the new toys before anyone else and maximize the advertising dollars.

That having been said, while my personal preference is the SwissTool, the PowerLock and the Core are no slouches and hold their own quite well.  I certainly cannot fault any of those tools and I don't think any of them should be slighted or omitted.  I would also like to add one of the big Gerbers on to that list, but I unfortunately have yet to pit one of the bigger Gerber models against the other "big guys."

The Core, the Surge, the SwissTool, the PowerLock and the SwissGrip... these are all hardcore tools that will never leave the user high and dry IMHO.  I know- I've tested and used them all under adverse conditions and they are all still clean and shiny and ready for more action.
