Times are changing...
on: June 04, 2011, 12:10:16 PM
I like knives. I carry more than one every day, and my collection of quality kitchen cutlery and EDC knives cost me a little fortune.

But in the last couple of months, I lost interest. I hardly buy any new knives, I stopped visiting the Spyderco forums, I do not even care for new releases by my favorite makers.

But, to be honest, I did not lose my EDC addiction, I buy more SAK and MT now, I carry both, SAK and MT (and knife) every day. And, interesting for I never really liked them, I'm fascinated by classic knives now.

So, while a Spyderco, Benchmade or even Chris Reeves knife has no attraction at the moment, classic slipjoints like the one Neil gave me find the way in my pockets. If I have to choose three knives to get, they would be a Laguiole, a Barkie Micro Canadian and a Peasant folder.

Maybe I get old, but functionality of SAK and MT, and classic charme of more traditional simple knives beat coolness and modern style now...

So called modern knives (is a Buck 110 a modern knife?) usually have just a single blade, so really you are looking for differences in steel, locks, size, finish etc. to justify buying another one.
Like most people here I probably have way more knives and  multitools than I, reasonably, need. I would say that the only knives I have that get constantly used are my kitchen knives and possibly a couple of others.

Classic knives (and I include the Swiss Army knives here too) have more variety in their shape, design, number and type of blades, so it's harder to lose interest in them. The good news is that nowadays there are quite a few, reasonably priced ones to buy. And they also look good...  :D

But don’t worry, I loose interest in buying knives/multitools every so often; it usually lasts for a few days only.  :D

Much the same happened to me , hard to beat the functions of a SAK or Multi . I don't worry as much about loss or theft , and I'm not afraid to use them hard .

I'm with you! I luv a good quality blade, a sweet dedicated folder that fits in my hand like a glove or a tough fixed blade that I could chop myself outta a car with but...

for the past few years SAKs and MTs are all I carry on me (several even). I like having more then less and I keep a good fixed blade in the car just in case but I'm using my SAKs all the time. :tu:
judge others by how they treat those they are allowed to mistreat

I used to have a tactical knife addiction- if it wasn't Zytel, carbon fiber, titanium and the latest super steel it wasn't good enough.  I had and carried some beautiful knives for the longest time.... except that the SAK I was also carrying at the time got used a lot more often, even for cutting, especially if it was a dirty job.  After all, you don't want to get that $200 knife dirty!  :P

I barely even noticed the lack of a dedicated knife when I stopped carrying one, especially once I started carrying a one handed opening SAK or multitool.

I was the same way. My folders weren't high-end; just large and tactical-looking. A job change made me carry smaller sizes, and I eventually just started to carry a Wave or Charge and the folder was just extra baggage.
