Scandi Sharpening & Stones..
on: June 10, 2011, 09:59:04 PM
Amici,
As I've posted before in the past, I've picked up a few Scandi fixed blades from Moras to Puukkos over the years and think they're great, but here's my question.

Now just how difficult is it to sharpen a Scandi grind, and also is there a special stone that should only be used to do so? I checked with one of my Puukko sellers and they recommend using a certain stone which hails from Finland so what's the scoop about Scandi sharpening and the stones to do so?

Cheers,
Serge

Stone from hardware store is fine, I use a combo Norton stone and a hard arkansas stone. Not as pretty as the jap waterstone sharpened knives but it works.

When you sharpen lay the knife flat on bevel, but don't use too much pressure or you may take off too much steel on one side and change the edge angle.

A lot of Scandi owners rarely stone their blades , just maintain them with strops . I'm guessing that a palm sized Japanese water stone would do a superb job . You could also check out the Scandi Sub Forum at British Blades , or Knife Forums . Lots of experts , who speak English .
