Big shipping problem
on: June 12, 2011, 04:13:38 PM
Hoping somebody has some good advice here: My GF ordered something off of Ebay about 2 weeks ago (a fishtank filter I believe). It was due to arrive by the 6th, on the 9th she contacted the seller when it hadn't arrived. The seller provided the Fed-Ex tracking number which states it was delivered here way back on the 28th, and signed for by "someone". The name Fed-Ex claims had signed for it didn't even look like a name, more like a string of letters. Anyone have any idea how she would go about either finding the package or getting her money back (it was over $100)?

First I'd file a claim with FedEx.  Find out what their promise to the customer is and what the next step is.  Talk to a supervisor.

I'd also file a claim with ebay, but not sure how much help you'd get there since the shipper sent it in a manner that covers him/her in event of loss.  Can't hurt to try though and get the ball rolling at least.

good luck!!

thats what I told her was to go to fed-ex first and see what could be done. Ive had packages disappear before, but not get delivered and signed for to somebody else, so not sure if anyone knew of any specific policies/rules/laws pertaining to the situation, since someone else signing for it I suppose would constitute fraud.

Make sure you search everywhere around the exterior of your GF residence. I remember reading of a similar situation some time ago where a neighbor signed for a package and hid it behind a flower pot on the back patio. It was thought lost for several days before found.

well seeing as we live in an apartment complex with some rather shady (drug dealing) neighbors anything left laying around would be long gone. i could honestly see them deciding to sign for it and keep it, despite having zero use for a fish tank filter.

finally heard back from fed-ex. they basically told us to smurf off. so we now have no way of finding the package because they apparently let anyone anywhere sign for anyone elses packages and its not their fault if they deliver it to the wrong address. WTF?

Now that sucks! I'd be beyond mad. Knowing me and my some what temper at times, I'd go knocking on everyones door asking about it. What about contacting maybe the apartments head?

Have you checked with the manager's office? They usually leave packages with them.

From what I understand, the package deliverers there aren't even obligated to ring your doorbell, to check if you are home in order for them to leave the package behind??

Here in The Netherlands, package deliverers are NOT allowed to just leave a package on your doorstep/porch unattended.
They can deliver it to your neighbor, but the deliverer will then leave a card in your mailbox, explaining they left it with the neighbor. They also have to fill in all the info of the package, including the tracking number, etc.

I think I would be kicking some ass at FedEX if I were you.  If you get no satisfaction, go higher.  After all, what's the point of having people sign for packages if they aren't the recipient?  Why would FedEX even bother to deliver packages if it didn't matter who they went to?  They could save a lot of money by just having the guys on the dock sign things then dump them in the gutter.

I'd be ripping new ones all over the place.

Actually after multiple calls she was finally able to talk to the delivery driver himself, who then told her he dropped it off with the building management office. Sure enough it was there, but this was never updated in the delivery info like it should have been, and management never saw fit to maybe tell us about it.
