Duke Nukem Forever
on: June 14, 2011, 12:48:31 PM
Well, thought I'd add a little thread about this... after waiting for over 12 years... (Duke Nukem 3D came out in 1996...) it's 2011, and the multiple vapourware of the year winner DNF is FINALLY out. I pre-ordered on the nostalgia factor alone.

It arrived yesterday, right before I had to head out to work. I finally got around to installing it this morning. I ended up playing for 80minutes according to Steam. I probably would have kept playing, but time for work soon, and I need to eat before I head out.

So far I don't dislike it as much as the demo led me to believe I would (as a pre-orderer I got the advance demo). It is fun, it is DUKE, and if there was any doubt, it's totally geared towards adults. It's definitely very linear, and you do kind of feel very guided (at least up to the point I'm at so far...) and despite the interactivity with lots of world objects, I feel it's failed a bit when you compare with the world interaction in games like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. that came out 4 years ago. I believe I'll probably play this game a couple times through, and shelve it like many others. Seeing the gameplay videos of upcoming ID Software's RAGE seems like they took the idea of DNF, and modernized it, and did it MUCH better... yet it's still a ways off before that hits the shelves.

I don't think multiplayer will have much appeal to me, as several FPS games have put me off that due to the invasion of children that repeatedly shoot you in the face 27 times in a row before you give up and try and find a better server... I don't have patience for that anymore. I'd like a nice COOP game that I can play with a group of friends, I don't think DNF is geared toward that, but I could be very wrong.

Anyone else "chewing bubblegum and kicking..." ?

Is it out yet? I think I will have to visit my local computer shop to see if I can score a copy. Like you, I have been waiting for this sequel forever. I have to get it just because. I loved playing Duke Nukem 3D...and although computer games have advanced quite a bit since this game was announced, a little nostalgic gaming sounds like a good thing to me right now.

COME GET SOME!

I've been thinking of getting it but I'm going to need a major PC upgrade first.

Nah, min spec is quite low actually (it is a game that should have come out years ago)

My machine seems to handle it well

I'm delighted to see this (finally, at long last) go gold. I was half-certain that it would just be an empty box with an IOU in it right up until you posted that you installed and played it.

I will have to get out and get the PS3 version at some point. My PC gaming days ended around the time of the second or third fruitless DNF announcement.  ::)

Mine is on the way for the Boy's Xbox 360...I did have to promise the Wifey that I would not let the Lads play the Game due to the rating though...The Last Game I really was into was Metal Gear Solid for the PlayStation...I'm sensing a really big learning curve without the assistance of the 15 year Old..Even my Youngest hands me my Posterior when we play Halo..

I'm honestly a bit afraid to play this cause it might ruin the memories I have of the 3D. I absolutely loved that game. Played it night and day. It was the first game that got me mixing game play and reality (don't ask  >:D ) I moved on from the genre but I still checked in from time to time to see if it's ever going to come out. I have to get me a copy for sure. Luckily the school break begins tomorrow, and only paperwork for the next month, so I have time to really try it out. :D

Min spec is low because it came out for the Xbox360, PS3 and PC at the same time.  The Xbox360 was specced as a mid-high range PC in 2005.

I went through this with Starcraft 2, which also had pretty low requirements, but since my laptop is a business machine, it's got little to no graphics processing power.  My desktop is currently in pieces, and would need a video card at the very least, and since it's a single core, it may not work at all.

true, but I'm thinking a video card alone would make your desktop worthy... and there should be a relevant available card for quite cheap...

keep in mind your single core is 3GHz, and the duals tend to be lower than 2Ghz...

True.... I just have to get off my ass and figure out if I need a PCI or PCIExpress video card, then get around to buying one and installing it.....

Sounds like a lot of effort!  :P

Been thinking about getting it as I am a Duke fan as well. But I am so far behind on releases and I am still trying to finish games I already own that I haven't quite completed.

Hell, I haven't got HALO: Reach yet!
