Boy did I zip up quick!!!
on: August 08, 2011, 05:59:09 AM
Today my wife and I went for a short hike around a secluded pond about 40 minutes north of the city. It's a good 1.5 mile hike in from the nearest parking lot which seems to be just enough to keep the "case of beer" rowdy smurfholes away. We did a hike along a mountain ridge and then hiked down to a nice secluded campsite right near the edge of the pond. We swam in the water and had a yummy picnic for a few hours. As we're packing up to leave I decide to go for one last swim. I generally prefer swimming naked and since we were alone, I started removing my shorts and walking towards the water. I'm standing right at the edge of the water with my shorts around my ankles when I look down and notice this fella staring back.

Even though there was no chance of him jumping out of the water and grabbing my smurfticles, it was like a reflex reaction to pull up and zip up :)  I've seen lots of turtles in ponds before but nothing this big. His head must have been 5 inches across, his front feet were similar in size to my medium sized fists. We gave him a few scraps of bread and tried to coax him out of the water just to see him more clearly but when he saw our dog he backed right off.

I've never known a turtle to attack a human in the water, so I did take my last dip of the day, but went in a good 10 feet away from where he was hanging.

Amazing creature :tu:

Geez, this was meant to be an educational thread and look at what you all have done, you should be ashamed of yourselves

Let's try to get this back on track:

Snapping turtle "fact" (from Wikipedia):
Snapping turtles have evolved the ability to snap because unlike other turtles, they are too large to hide in their own shells when confronted. Snapping is their defense mechanism.

Here is another fact. Snapping turtles will generally leave humans alone because they are too large to be tasty food items. However, if said human has either the misfortune of stepping on one unknowingly, or only dipping ones toe in the proverbial gene pool, decide to tease one knowingly, they will bite.

Now their bite has been known to lop of toes and fingers. Not something you would want to antagonize. My heartfelt concern to those who unknowingly stepped or sat on one. I feel for you.  :salute:

And remember that a snapper's neck can double their overall length, so you can't give them too much space.  Many a person has found out the hard way that these turtles don't have a sense of humor but they do have a hell of a reach.
