wrench knife
on: December 09, 2007, 07:24:29 PM
I was asked by a member to talk about a wrench knife I have come up with. I have been making knives since 1974 in one form or another so I looked at the 6 inch crescent wrench I had laying around and decided to make a knife out of it. I cut the eye off the end and forged a blade. Care must be taken not to heat the wrench part during this process. I spark tested the handle and thought it had a good carbon content. I quenched in oil and then drew a temper- purple on the back of the blade and straw on the cutting edge. Made a very unique tool. The sheath I made is intended to be held when using the wrench as a wrench without cutting your hand. Still thinking on a cover for the blade that will fit in the sheath.

I agree- that's a pretty fascinating tool you've created!

Just out of curiosity, how did you manage to heat treat the handle but not the wrench head?  That must have been a heck of a process!

The design reminds me of the Weske bicycle knife somewhat... I'll have to see if I can dig up the pics I have of one because I can't find it online....

I was hoping you'd chime in- if it weren't for you I wouldn't even know what the Weske bicycle knife was!

As a matter of fact Ray does make these for sale. He's got a couple different sizes listed on eBay right now, along with some other fine looking cutlery. (Just do a search for Rantanen Custom)

Nice work Ray, I'll be wanting to get one of those from you  :)

Ray sent me a photo of his 6" wrench knife alongside the smaller 4" model.

I'm leaning towards the 4" myself  :)
