Compass
on: December 10, 2007, 05:55:16 PM
I was discussing a compass on a spy capsule or on the Wenger Tool Chest.  One thing I wish for if a compass is added to a multi-tool is that it is reliable and actually useful.  It doesn't have to be as accurate as an orienteering compass, I own about half a dozen but it should settle and point North reliably for an emergency backup compass.  It should be liquid filled and rotate freely.  Looks like the one on the Tool Chest doesn't really do this.  Interestingly while Victorinox adds an altimeter to some of their knives I haven't seen a digital compass.  This would be a nice feature.

I've had pretty good luck with these:

Suunto brand seem to be fairly accurate also, and are made in small form factors.

Yeah, looks decent.  I EDC a Dalvey pocket compass.  It is a traditional pocket compass design but has a liquid filled rotating bezel capsule.  I carry it in a watch pocket.

I have a few compasses but the ones I like best are from Recta.

Can you guess why? :D

I have about 8 compasses from Suunto, Brunton and Silva.  Would be nice if Victorinox added a digital to the altimeter function.

Give them another couple of years to develop it properly and I am certain you'll soon be seeing full fledged GPS units built into the scales!

Now we are asking for stuff from Santa.  You'd need the controls for a GPS on the scales but I'm sure it could be figured out.  A digital compass would be enough for how.  I hate it when a compass gets added to a gizmo just to say it has a compass and it doesn't really work.  I would have loved that Tool Chest with a compass but the review I read on it didn't impress me and it adds a lot of bulk to the knife.  I have a Suunto wrist compass that is really nice for EDC but only when I am outdoors.

Have you seen the Victorinox XAVT?

http://www.sosakonline.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=201&Itemid=35

In the scale it includes a clock (with alarms and date) barometer, altimeter, thermometer and a few other functions. The way Vic is going high tech and electronics are shrinking, I wouldn't be surprised if they managed it.

Yes, I have seen it.  It's not exactly EDC.  Sort of their answer to the Wenger Giant.  I have seen those on the scales of other models and wondered why they didn't add a digital compass.

Uh... nevermind.  I just pulled one of these out to be sure it was liquid filled.  It is, but the durn thing is locked up tight, and doesn't spin at all anymore.

EDIT  I just beat it against my hand and it freed up.  It still seems to point accurately.  :-\

well this is just a little bit off topic-sidenote,BUT if theres anyone else who has stretched his earlobes with heavier cauge earrings, you better check out that the balls in the rings arent made out of neodymium magnets.i just noticed while i was playing with compass i got from Benner that the needle in it kind of followed my movements and i didnt have anything magnetic in me.then i lifted the compass to my eye level and the damn thing started to point in the middle of my face :D.i moved it a bit from side to side till i realised the needle points to my ears.i have  1 " diameter stainless piercing lobes in my ears, and thru them goes bcr piercing rings with these gun black captivity balls that were magnetic!.and i sure didnt know this before at all.

so next time im goin to wood ill strip the rings off so i dont get lost >:D

Thats a good point and one I was going to mention .It doesnt have to be magnetic  , any metal will make it swing if its near .I can make our boat compass go way off just by bringing my multitool to within 18inches and moving it from one side to another .This is called deviation and a magnetic source makes it even worse so be carefull when you use a compass , even a mobile phone in your pocket could make a difference  .

The Vic Traveller has the same scales, and is very EDCable.
Still no digital compass though.
