Stupid eBay
on: September 14, 2011, 06:22:58 PM
So there I am, minding my own business, trolling around eBay, trying to get in an old fashion honest snipe or two , and then someone bids on a used ST300 I had my eye on.

Why would someone pay $41.81 plus $5.20 shipping on a used ST300, when Amazon has them new for $48.51 with free shipping?
 :twak:

I have to agree.I have bid on used items that sold for $8-$12 over Amazon or even Walmart list prices.Amazon is my go to place to check prices and user reviews. When I see an item I am interested in I put it on the watch list and research the going price on Amazon.I think people get caught up in the biding process and are not educated in the current prices.

There are people in countries other than the US you know, and Amazon will not ship knives and MTs across the border.

You know to be honest I have never had any problems on eBay. And I have never paid more than I have too. Although I do my research and don't bid more than it's worth.
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

That's not a law, that's eBay putting a blanket ban on things like multitools, knives and other "dangerous" goods.

There was a story in the paper a while back where a woman travelling from Canada to the US to visit her grandkids was arrested and detained at the boarder for carrying "contraband materials".  The contraband was Kinder eggs.  The boarder patrol was trying to make her pay something like a $500 dangerous goods disposal fee.

Apparently American children can't be trusted with any sort of self control.  Too bad.  Kinder Eggs are delicious.

I think it was actually $2500, and it's due to a law against having inedible items concealed in an edible item.  I wonder why the same law doesn't apply to lollipops and corn dogs?  :D

It is a daft rule of eBay in the uk. I cannot buy some brands of multi on eBay (leatherman, victorinox) but can find SOG, and no brand.
I can also buy foot long + billhooks, axes.
What gets me is most low life that carry a blade for doing others harm will not pay the money involved in purchasing a leatherman or other quality product and so I think it is a large overreaction on ebays behalf.

To be fair, eBay only changed the rules after the BBC watchdog program ran a article about buying "illegal kives" from all round the world via eBay. The facts of the program were wrong on some of the knives. But they did manage to buy a plastic "stealth" knife that was shipped into the UK.

Remember this was at the height of the UK knife crime media madness. The kneejerk reaction from eBay was a blanket ban on all knives sales. eBay couldn't care less about it's cutomers, they were more worried about how it will look to the general public if a "eBay" knife was found to be used in a stabbing.

It's a bit like banning spoons in an effort to reduce health problems from being overweight. I'm stocking up on spoons right now, just incase.

Thanks for letting me know what prompted the eBay decision. I had been away, when I came back it was done. Fully agree with your spoons argument. May send it to eBay and see what response I get.
