Gerber warranty is awesome!!! (PICS)
on: September 22, 2011, 11:38:52 PM
I sent in a old beat up Gerber MP400 that had all the tools missing from one side. I sent it in on the 12th and received a package back today!!!!! That's a 10 day total turnaround!!! I received a brand new replacement with a new sheath as well. The only thing that is throwing me off is the blade. It appears to have a a MP450 blade but has scissors like the MP400. I am not much of a Gerber guy so maybe someone can enlighten me on the subject.

Either way I give a big thumbs up to Gerbers Customer Service Department.  :salute:

EDIT: I forgot to add that the pliers feel VERY gritty.
EDIT #2: After playing with them for a little the pliers feel better already.

Gerber have a great Warranty .The 400 and 450 have the same blade , its just the 450 has it in the opposite handle so the nail nick comes on the outside . All new std 400's have the nail nick on the inside of the tools .

Glad you had good result from Gerber. My recent experience in the UK wasn't as great unfortunately.

I had a problem with my MP700 Urban Legend, which with the right spare part would have been a very easy repair (for either me or them), but no repair or parts were offered. Instead they wanted to exchange my high RRP US made MP700 with the lower RRP Chinese made Evo or equivalent  :-\ The tone of voice asking how old the tool was on the phone wasn't too encouraging either - it was almost a "well, what do you expect" tone with the tool being discontinued. Direct contact was also made with the US HQ for Gerber thanks to the great folk here at MTo, but this didn't bear any fruit either which was a shame.

It is also a shame that Gerber's URL does not let anyone over here access their US site, but is diverted to a UK site which prohibits (or makes it more hassle) to try and contact HQ directly to discuss issues and try to find a workable solution.

I've found another route round the problem myself thankfully, but I was left feeling somewhat unsupported over here in the UK by Gerber (or at least by their UK contingent). I'll shortly have THREE 700's on their way to me, and I'll be carrying out my own running repairs as required from the spare tools. I really like the tool, but I'll certainly be hesitant about buying other new Gerber gear in future UNLESS either I feel the item will run for many years (such as the 400 & 600), OR I start hearing about great support on these shores particularly on models that are not in current circulation. People in the UK typically have to pay more for Gerber products (and indeed many other products) than US customers, and I feel it's only fair that they should receive the same level of support as the customers paying cheaper prices on US soil.

I wish I knew about all this before I bought my Flik ... but at least I know now. I'm sure I would have had much better response from Vic, LM & Wenger (not so sure about SOG - all I ever had was the runaround from them too)

Many thanks once again to the guys here who offered assistance with this issue - you know who you are  :salute:

Wow I would be a bit mad about the whole situation. I would be writing Gerber a E-Mail explaining how you were treated and how your future purchases will be based on your experience.

Wow I would be a bit mad about the whole situation. I would be writing Gerber a E-Mail explaining how you were treated and how your future purchases will be based on your experience.

To be honest I did consider it, but as both the UK & US Gerber offices have apparently been unable to offer any worthwhile assistance (one of them not even responding to the query), I thought it might have more  :pok: to post my account instead on a global forum dedicated towards multitools, used by many members, lurkers and fleeting observers as the primary online reference point for anything vaguely multitool related ;)

I also thought it might be useful for folks to know what things are like this side of the pond. I didn't make it clear before but there's no repair service offered whatsoever in the UK from what I was led to believe, there's only replacement service available. Unfortunately it appears their UK staff are far less familiar with what Gerber actually make than we are on here

a) tool offered as replacement was not equivalent (or certainly not IMHO), probably because ...
b) it took them a while to figure out what a MP700 was in the first place. I think it's on their crib sheet as 700 Urban, not MP700, Multiplier 700 or Urban Legend because those descriptions just confused them as I was trying to explain which tool had the issue.

 I don't expect all countries to have their own dedicated repair centre, nor every importer to be an expert on obsolete models, but I would still have expected anything that comes in a box that says lifetime warrenty and a global brand name on it to receive better support  :-\ At least give us the option of speaking to HQ from the website rather than just referring us to importers

However, just like anything else this was only my personal experience and others may fare better (I hope they do), but I thought it was right to give open feedback on my experience here ... and again ... hats off to the guys at MTo for being magnificent as always :salute:
